Internet bullying causing depression

Postby Fresha » Mon Feb 17, 2020 2:22 am

Some spiteful people I used to work with got together and started a smear campaign against me. They posted false allegations on Facebook and elsewhere. I’ve tried to counter the messages but everyone’s taking the side of the slanderers. Their attacks are anonymous so although I know who they are I can’t prove it. I was hoping it would go away but it’s been a month and I’m still receiving detrimental messages from third parties who have seen these defamatory comments about me, believing them to be true. This is very hurtful because I showed nothing but friendship and respect towards the people who are doing it, but they’re doing it because they have a certain agenda. It’s making me depressed and Im losing my motivation and willpower. Simply knowing there’s this anonymous network of hateful messages out there, written by people too cowardly to even put their names to their comments, or approach me in person should they have some kind of issue, is becoming so heavy day after day. It’s internet bullying I think. It’s been going on for a month. It would be nice to get some advice or hear from anyone who’s been through a similar situation.

I’ve gone through similar issues multiple times. I’ve had people slander me, threaten me and accuse me of all sorts of things.

Over time I learned what works and what doesn’t. My most recent strategy is the best and has yet to fail. I ignore them. I do nothing. Or, if I wish to stand on principle, I simply repeat my message periodically.

My thought process is pretty simple. My friends, family, and colleagues know who I am and what I stand for. Slander me all you wish, it isn’t going to change how those closest to me feel about me. In fact, being under attack it galvanizes those close to me, it strengthens those relationships. If it does influence some people to turn away from me, no problem. What do I care? These people were fringe acquaintances at best.

And that is the question I have for you. Why do you care? It’s FaceBook. These “friends” are not actually your friends. Block them. Delete them. Ignore them. Move on with life.

If you don't mind me asking, what is their agenda? This is my insatiable curiosity speaking.

I look at a number of vegan activism and plant-based and raw food YouTube channels. Trolls are always in the comment section to denounce the information in one way or another. Does that make what they are saying true, or are they protecting the status quo, putting up defenses against positive change. The best thing to do is to "not feed the troll." Truth will win out eventually, even if it is a rough go for now.

Hello,
Silence is a good weapon. Most people bully online for a reaction, and for a while the bully becomes popular on social media bc the more you fight back, the more it fuels their ratings and such. So if you simply delete your FB and all social medias (make a new one if you want) and change your number, problem solved. They cant bully someone who isnt there or doesnt respond. How boring for them, and eventually they will look stupid if they keep beating a dead horse. It is a coward who will hide behind a computer or phone and say things they would never say to your face. Its this generation, spoiled cowardly brats some are. People who truly value you will automatically be on your side and those I wouldnt worry about. This will allow you to find out who your true friends are, and sometimes the answer may shock you, gotta be prepared for that.

Just delete the account until everybody forget. And try to be the best version of you everyday, so everybody who bullied you felt your power!

I sadly don't see Facebook doing much to protect anyone from bullying, their support service is more or less just about censoring every twentieth violent picture posted to the site (with the rest going through without a problem).
Dies that bullying have an impact on your real life relationships? Friends/acquaintances/family behaving a different way because of the smearing? If that is happening, then it's a real issue. If nobody from around you has changed their attitude, then yes, removing your social network account (and recreating one a month or so from now if you want) could do the trick.

Today I read an article at the New York Times about women who were forced to do porn and then these vids were uploaded to Pornhub which caused enormous bullying to those women and girls and I found myself thinking that Internet has already become our new reality :(

In a different context, FB is itself a bully (by using censorship).

What i would say is complain and try and nip it in the bud. Even social networking sites take bullying and abuse very seriously. This guy sent a picture of his penis to me, and next thing i know he was blocked and deleted by the social networking site.
