Tech Nonsense On The Internet

I wonder where these very silly ideas come from and why they gain acceptance. Here's an example:
Should you drop your phone and the screen cracks as a result, the cracks can be repaired by toothpaste. Simply smear toothpaste over the crack and presto!
Totally untrue, as it happens. There are videos where phone repair staff put the theory to test. It doesn't work. Plus, I tried it myself. A ridiculous idea.
The same advice is proclaimed on Google for scratched DVDs. How on earth, I ask, can damaged data on a laser disk be "filled in" with toothpaste?? And what effect does it have once paste gets inside your DVD player? I would urge to never introduce either soap or pastes into electronics equipment, especially around the laser.
Following on from that, what I (and many others) are finding is that DVD disks can degrade. First time I noticed it I was watching an episode and the picture froze. After cleaning the disk, no joy. Looking at older disks under
the light you can see lots of tiny scratches. Worse by far are the double sided disks. I'm not sure how the scratches come about but assume maybe just over time. It seems too not all disks are affected as the quality varies.
