Autosuggestion: First or Second Person?

Postby Medio Modo » Thu Mar 26, 2020 5:04 pm

Hello fellow forum members. Is it better to say address the subconscious mind as "I" or "You"? I would appreciate any experiences and suggestions which of these two approaches have worked best.

Cheers!

There are no peer reviewed studies, of which I am aware, that show one is better or best.

Why do you believe that it is an important distinction?

Thank you for the response.

I asked for personal experiences, not a professional opinion. From literature I have read, there seem to be two schools of thought on the approach. For instance, there was Émile Coué, who touted repeating to oneself as much as possible the famous phrase, "Every day in every way I am getting better and better." Then there was Theron Dumont in his fascinating little volume, "The Abdominal Brain," He taught that the subconscious mind is centered in the solar plexus and must addressed like a good friend, as if it were a separate being from the conscious, thinking self.

The reason I am interested is to create a recording to play as a lullaby before sleep, and I wondered if anybody had experience with using the first or second person in such an arrangement.

In that case I would choose "you, Medio", because even your own voice is external to you if it's recorded.

I wondered if anybody had experience with using the first or second person in such an arrangement.

Yes, some. I took the Silva Method course in the Nineties and again some years later, because one-time payment means you can take the course again any time you like. The instructor always said "you" but the recommended affirmations for our own use were "I".

Then create two recordings. Try them both.

Whatever personal experiences another person relays will have zero reliability as it applies to you. It is merely an exercise in social proof. If a few people say they prefer chocolate over strawberry it means nothing. You have to try both to see which you like more.

I figured first person when talking to oneself and second person in a recording would be the most reasonable, and your answer seems to confirm that. Thank you very much! :)
