Re-entering the world

Postby eekh20 » Wed Apr 25, 2018 12:44 pm

Hi all,

I have been thinking these past few days that I really want to stop giving into my social anxiety. I am receiving CBT for it at the moment and it has bought up a whole load of thoughts and feelings!

Nevertheless, I am starting to feel motivated to become more outgoing as I feel that I have limited myself too much and held back over participating in things I would like to due to my fears. I really feel that they have taken control of my life and left me lacking in it.

However, I am still a little concerned because I know obviously I could easily be triggered by something in the environment and go back to square one.

So basically, I'm asking for some advice on this situation....any suggestions will be helpful!

Best advice I can give you is:

-1- Continue with CBT, focus on CBT and the exercises and advice of your therapist.

-2- Don’t try to get additional advice from strangers online.

It is like paying for a personal trainer, going to the gym and you are doing good, but then you start shopping for advice from strangers that have varying degrees of fitness training if any training at all. This advice might pile on, be in conflict with, and simply detract from all the progress you are making.

It is a positive sign that you want to take on more, so ask your therapist what more you might do.

I'm glad to hear about your progress with CBT. Perhaps I could give better input if I had more information about what it is you would like to do. Are you looking to start a new job, join a club, pick up a new hobby? What are your interests.

I agree with the above poster -- soliciting advice online can be more harmful than good. However, perhaps I could share some similar experiences to yours.

Getting triggered by something in the environment wouldn't put you back at square one.

The only way to get back to square one is to stop going to therapy and doing whatever you need to re-enter the world.
