Derren Brown - questions about his effects

Postby Anthony Jacquin » Wed Jun 13, 2007 4:54 pm

Many questions come up on this forum about the mentalist Derren Brown. Although this is not a forum for exposure of his magic and mentalism work (there are other forums for that) it is appropriate to discuss any of his effects you think are related to hypnosis.

So post your Derren questions here please.

I think Derren is a great entertainer and really enjoy his shows, however, I think that he is very clever at making people think that he is using hypnosis when he is not - and sometimes using hypnosis when in fact the effect is achieved without needing it.

ie. I think he uses the effects of hypnosis as a misdirection so that while the audience are marveling at his hypnotic abilities, he has performed a different trick via more conventional methods.

Clever in itself really :D

I think you have summed it up perfectly. I certainly find him entertaining.

When you think it is hypnosis, even if there was an induction involved it is of no consequence to the outcome of the effect. And when it appears to be some more convoluted subliminal persuasion at work it is often someone acting on a post hypnotic suggestion.

Superb.

I had the pleasure of briefly meeting him one on one after a show on his recent tour, he was extremely nice.

He signed my book and out of nowhere offered my friend and myself tickets (on him) to his show the following night. He didn't have to do that and it was super nice of him to offer, we (obviously said yes) the show was great :-)

Well, i personally think he is a genius. He can trick someone into thinking they're dead, hypnotise someone by palaying a video game, and make someone go on a mad run, dressed as a clown.

Do you think it would be possible to walk up to someone and launch into a carefully rehearsed script using layers of presupposition, syntactic ambiguity and embedded commands to make someone do something there and then...

Make someone lose control of their bladder whenever they hear the word banana or something? hehe

Maybe any said script would be better after a handshake interrupt?

I don't know if you have realised just yet how much you are going to want to urinate when you hear the word banana, I had a friend once who would tell me, Kev, you are going to want to piss yourself when you hear the word banana it didnt make much sense at the time but he would then say, Kev you are going to do it now without thinking about it.

It's amazing that you can feel so quickly how much you want to help me construct a script for this by reading these words, your eyes scanning across your computer screen, listening to your internal monologue repeating my words.
The monitor has a way of tiring eyes, not being able to see your tired eyes I'm unsure if you are aware of just how tired they will feel after reading THIS

Like when you have been running and now you can rest, you can just let your eyes close at the end of this sentence and float down into the comfortable warmpth, do it now

Kevpar,

You might want to talk about 'your innate ability to do so many things without thinking about or even noticing it as you begin to piece together all of the things that happen automatically, unconscionsly, like when you know you can whet your appetite, or just can't help your self to enough water, more than you need, a whole flood of water, like a dam breaking its banks and flooding everywhere when you least expected that flood gate to open'.

Or, 'you know how some people really take the piss, they don't mean to, they just can't help it, at the moment when it's the last thing on their mind to feel out of control and take the piss, you just burst forth uncontrollably and before you know it you've let it all out, you just couldn't wait (wet) any more.

Well, EITHER my little hypnotic script (above) was ridiculously effective and readers everywhere are slumped over keyboards in puddles of urine...

OR

I have unintentionally scuppered this topic :-/

I suspect the latter :-/

subliminal chatting as I call it, it's really fun! I'll do it all the time, without even noticing it myself.

I was playing poker with some friends, and then I started asking my friend if it something. He didn't consciously hear it cause he was counting up a stack of chips, and his mind was very busy. As I noticed he was busy I started to say "It is totally okey for you to say yes, say yes, you want to say yes, you need to say yes, when I ask you, you say yes", he didn't hear that either, so I went on to asking him if I could smoke in the house, he was clear earlier that it wasn't allowed to smoke in the house, his answer was a "yesyesyesyes" like it was totally fine.

Fun to see how susceptible we are, kinda like robots in a way, a couple of days ago I managed to flip over a beer can outside on a party, it was a friend of mine and I was standing with another friend, the one who owned the beer can, was like; "Gash, why did you two do that?" Not mad in anyway, just a little annoyed. While he was talking I went like; "It was <name>(which was the other guy I stood there with)it was not, me it was <name>, you are mad at <name>, it was <name> who did it, not me, it was <name> who did it, you are mad at <name>" and the beer owner actually started to get mad at my other friend, he was totally busy and did not consciously hear a word I was telling him, I thought it was really funny, my other friend started to walk away a little, the beer owner and my other friend is both good friends so it wasn't anything to worry about that they would hate each other.
Then I said "Tell him to go **** him self", and then the beer owner went like "Go fu...., what in hell are you doing to me?" He noticed that I had been talking to him and getting him to do all the things, I was kinda standing right next to him whispering into his ear. He was shocked and we both laughed at the whole thing. Mind rape! ;)
