What do successful people have?

Postby Robok » Fri Apr 03, 2015 7:07 am

I wonder how we can call this specific factor of psychology that many (most?) successful people have. I know a few leaders, owners of large companies and people outstanding on their field. All of them have two things in common:

1. Peace. They seem to be calm people, they usually speak slowly and their messages are clear and straightforward.

2. Lack of perfectionism. Sometimes I call those people "dumb", perhaps because I'm jealous :) But there's something annoying in them, like the lack of awereness. They are very productive while doing many things wrong. Their thinking seems to be as slow as their speech, but they are still active. The result is that they do 50 things, where for example 40 are mistakes and 10 are success, while others do 2 perfect things. Today I consider perfectionism as something very, very bad and troublesome, but still some lack of awereness of those people is annoying for me.

What do you think? How can we call those properties? Goal-oriented thinking? Low anxiety? They do more and think less - is this the recipe of success?

I have to admit I am a little confused about your question. You shared that you see peace in these individuals and that they are able to deliver clear messages. You also state that they lack perfection. While their "business" may be successful, it does not mean they are great leaders.

Great leaders have many qualities, one of which, they seek out other great people who can work as a team to deliver the best solution for the company. One person is never the only individual making a company successful or a failure.

The recipe for success, I believe lies in having great leaders, or in being one. Working as a team, and having members on your team that contribute their own uniqueness, in following the vision of the company.

It might seems as if they are lacking perfectionism. A leader doesn't have to know everything (details) about the company. He doesnt have to be perfect in everything.
He has to get the right team and lead them to reach the goals of the company!

Know when someone will be an asset to their business or when they would be a liability is an extremely important quality of a leader.

My interpretation of what you mean is leaders have the correct balence between standard and efficiency, you often see more junior members of staff cracking under the pressure as unable to do a task efficiently and then more on.

Staying calm under pressure is a main reason why some people rise up in their career, something I am trying get better at myself!!!

Nice one Wave.

It's sometime hard to perform well under pressure. Let alone to be calm. It's very challenging, but it's also worth it to learn the skills needed to achieve your goals successfully

Okay, here's the deal. First, you need to define a successful person. Success to one person might be completely alien to another.

For a minute, let's assume you mean financially successful in business. These people first and foremost have a very clear vision as to the end result they want to achieve. They then have to determine what they need to do to get there. The degree of perfectionism will vary depending on the end result they want. The smart ones know they can't know everything, so they acquire those skills and knowledge from other people. An example might be a doctore who sucks at running a business, so s/he hires people who are knowledgable in that area.

The new business models are changing from rule by intimidation to rule by support of both employees and customers.

Do successful people make mistakes? Yep, they sure do. Successful people learn from these mistakes and move on, the rest fail because they give up.

So, the answer to success in business is:

To have a clear vision of the end result
Determine what tools you will need to achieve it (education, people and physical tools)
    Know your competition
    Know your customer
Know what differentiates your business from that of your competition
Don't be a control freak (if you have to be the one to do everything, you forfeit the benefits that come with those that can do the job better than you).
    Learn from mistakes
    Never give up

Please note that being a perfectionist isn't in the list. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has unexpected events that set them back such as a business destroyed by fire, flood and weather.

One of the thing that successful people have is resilience. The ability to pick themselves up and dust themselves and not get down when the tied turns against them

1. Knowledge
2. Skill
3. Desire

and as Vic said 4. Never giving up

"1. Peace. They seem to be calm people, they usually speak slowly..."

I believe that people who are truly at peace (and perhaps not by chance, often quite successful people), are able to remain calm at *all times* because they realise, and accept, that 'life is too important to be taken seriously'.

Or as Marcus Aurelius (the Roman philosopher-emperor) put it:

'... those that were so proud and stately, where are they now? ...All dead and gone long since. Some of them no sooner dead, than forgotten.'

So why stress that your boss (perhaps a multibillionnaire CEO who can snuff out your career with half a phone call) is yelling at you?
Imagine a short time from now- a blink of eye in cosmological time- and ask:

'Where are they now?'

Lack of perfectionism is perhaps a negative perception of somebody not being afraid to make mistakes. One way to get better and to gain better knowledge and understanding is to make plenty of mistake and then learn from them.

Learning from mistakes is definitely a quality that many of them have.
Not giving up, not paying attention to the nay sayers.

Think of it another way: what successful people DON'T have that mediocre people suffer from is something called analysis paralysis. Successful people go out there and make things happen without overthinking things. The average Joe on the other hand obsesses over what can go wrong, thereby analyzing himself out of taking a leap of faith.
