Sometimes I get a song stuck in my head but I don't know the intensity of your situation, I would suggest meditation. Guided meditation channels on you tube to get on a different level of conciousness. Also, if you tell your brain to not think about something you will. If I say don't think about a pink elephant you will. Remember you are in control, and just relax and breathe deep and focus on the meditation.

Hi,

I know it is kind of a long shot to post in a 6 year old topic, but I too have this constant earworm/music in head phenomenon after quitting weed. It startet around 1 month sober and still lingers at 3,5 months...
I just need to know that this will pass. Anybody else experiencing this?

Hey Guys,

I'm on a similar boat, I think the music is somewhat linked to the anxiety inside my head, and it's there all the time, sometimes when I'm focused on something else, it tends to go away, This time when I had quit I remember that nighht the music was very very much there playing in my head, and now I'm on my 8th Month, but it still does seem to linger on. Anyone who's music just passed away, also I have been doing meditation but again this one is a different sort of music, this is just there, not a thought,or an image which tends to pass away and it does get annoying and disturbing and tends to increase if you get anxious too. Any reply on the same would be appreicated.

Hi aashray123,

I'm sorry to hear that you have the same issue, it is really annoying. I'm close to six months clean of weed and still struggle with the music in the head. Some days I manage better, some days it is worse, but it never goes away. There is a thread "your baked brain" which is very interesting and also mentions this issue briefly. I've also found out that it is a common and known symptom of benzo withdrawal, but I don't know if it is comparable. I have yet to find something effective and permanent, but distraction is essential to get through the day. I just hope that time will alleviate this.

I wish you all the best and some relieve soon.

Haha, well yeah, It surely keeps on changing, so does the intensity, but again, I do feel recovery is around the corner, so gotta stay strong, and yes, having a good song is very crucial, but it's mostly the same old 8-9 songs which cling on, the ones which get subconsciously twined inside us I feel.

Yes, I can kind of change it by "suggestion" but not always. It is the same with me like a dozen of songs which have branded themselves inside my head and can get triggered by simply reading a prominent word from the chorus.
Interestingly I've noticed that I have about 30-45 minutes blissfull silence right after I wake up, so maybe it has to do something with the cortisol peak. I've read that longtime THC consumption blunts the cortisol production in the morning and maybe it is coming back now with full force. I'm no biologist and these are just wild theories trying to explain what's happening. I also think that I could deal with it a lot better if I knew when this would stop, like "with 10 months sobriety it will subside", but that is not how this works. It gets really frustrating, most of the time I get through the day just fine. Anxiety and depression from earlier months way down, but the earworms stay. At least I know now through this forum that I'm not alone with this.

Yep, and if we're going down that road "500 miles" almost made me go insane :D
But classical music or music without text doesn't stick and sometimes very rarely it makes the head tunes go away for a while. Also Wim Hof breathing is good for mindfullness when it gets too much. That is all the tipps and tricks I found so far.

What works for me is definitely tons of water about 4000 ml every day, good sleep, breathing exercises such as the 4-7-8, also cycling for about 45 mins everyday, I feel its a very blended process of recovery, with the body anxiety reducing first, that in turn gets us more into our heads, that's how I've been feeling, and then you simply start making peace with it because it tones down to such a degree. What doesn't work for me is any sort of AD's or drinking alcohol, music does mask it, but I've been abstaining from the lyrical ones, for now, mostly jazz music when I'm working out or maybe listening to some soothing natural sounds. Also, at night, I do experience minor issues with tinnitus as well, but that does get better if I blow out or press on my sinuses, that could naturally just be a response to the chilly season as well. Else today has been very comfortable even at work, also with cognitive thinking, I'm able to digress more into the thinking, and it's a lot more comfortable. Hoping it only goes better from here. *touchwood*

I hope so, too. I would have never guessed that weed can mess you up this good.
I've also noticed that I'm in a worse state for the following days if I dring alcohol.
Can I ask you to post your progress, if the earworms subsided or at least toned down to a "normal" degree? Because I don't think that there will be a total remedy, but maybe at least not all day long every day.
Thank you and I wish you all the best :)

Hey,

Firstly there's gonna be complete recovery, you gotta believe in that, and yes they do tone down, tone up and sometimes just spiral and go inside where they came from. And yes, there has been progress, and yup alcohol does mess up the situation to a degree that makes it worse. In terms of progress, as you said, the more you get used to them, the more they start toning down. Mostly it's anxiety around it which first subsides, then the earworms themselves. Being in a routine, keeping yourself busy helps and well regarding my progress, I feel, If I do recall, it did bother me a lot when I first realized it was happening, now it's mostly there but you start working around it, just today I was taking a nap, with the earworms more or less very prominent and out of nowhere it just drained in and there wasn't complete silence but I could literally feel it going inside and then there was this tingling in my ear, the low-frequency sound you hear, so something is happening up there.

Other than that, definitely have to pull it through the 1-year mark to actually see something substantial, really working on improving my mental health and hoping for the best. And for me, the way it's become manageable is, that my body wouldn't react to it, so I could work on whatever I'm doing without being bothered, so there's less reaction to it, I think that has come naturally, and personally for me, if the earworms subside, I'd be completely recovered I feel, so let's hope for the best!

Update:

Look brother, It's as simple, our brain has just woken up from a coma we put it into for 10 years, and it's going all over the places, like you said,It does shut up when you're focussed right, Now currently I'd say it's alright for me, I mean, my life wouldn't be any different if the music stops or not anymore, it's there and let it be, 10 years of numbing your brain and then suddenly waking it up could do that to you, it's better to suffer and get accustomed, and if it goes off, I mean, It wasn't even there and it got triggered again, but that's part and parcel of recovery, let's stay strong and enjoy our lives man because the best form of happiness and satisfaction can only be attained through life fully not by intoxicating it!

Hiho,
I get what you are saying, the brain is in a weird state right now. I also believe that accpeting is probably the way forward but I guess I'm just way to stubborn for that, at least at the moment. Anyway, I just wanted to say that it's quite helpful to speak to somebody also experiencing this, so thank you :)
