Transcendental Meditation is Working for Me

Hello All

Last week I posted about considering Transcendental Mediation as a means to deal with anxiety and panic attacks. To research the topic, I watched some YouTube videos, and purchased a book -- Super Mind. From there, I checked Google for TM Centers in my area. The fees ranged from $385 - $1,500 -- depending on your income. The class was taught over five days.

Before taking the class, I had already started to mediate on my own with great success. The private instruction from the teacher helped to go even deeper. By the end on the second day of instruction, I began to see changes -- small changes in my daily life. One of these changes were reading out loud in front of others.

I usually avoid reading in front of people because the words get caught in my throat. I sound like an idiot. However last Saturday, I read before a group. The reading went well until I realized I was reading in front of people. The point being, I read a couple of paragraphs. The next time, it could be an entire page. And after that, I could let the fear go.

TM is working for me because it doesn't depending on clearing your mind, or focusing at a object. Instead, my unorganized thoughts are welcomed as a sign of stress relief. And, instead of focusing on an external object, the teacher assigns a mantra to focus inwardly. The practicing is working for me. Therefore, I wanted to share my success with other sufferers. I hope the practice helps you.

A free alternative is to join Toastmasters or local speaking/book club. These groups are specifically aware of and address the very common fear and anxiety that comes from speaking in front of others.

Free. Totally free.

And once you no longer fear speaking in front of others, what else might you be able to accomplish?

Toastmasters is good for speaking anxieties if that is truly what you are afraid of and don't have an underlying condition where you need calming practices like tm or other meditations. Furthermore, toastmasters will make you a better speaker by practice.

I also do TM, and highly recommend it, however. Like you said RosaD the practice of TM is awesome. You sit and focus on one word or phrase. Through further research I have also learned it doesn't have to be one of the 7 mantras they give you. I actually changed my mantra to Jesus on the third day of TM without telling the instructors (they get mad if you pray in your transcended phase or don't use their mantras). I did this so that I can also use TM as a prayer.

Anyways you sit and focus on your mantra until it fades away and there is emptiness. However, thoughts will still come to you and they won't make sense. They can be anything, but when they happen you lightly think back to the mantra very lightly so you can let it go and go back to that sea of calm. For me, as someone who still can get anxiety even when practicing this it helped me to not be fearful of my anxiety. Instead, when it happens I can bring in my mantra.

I like to think of it like this. We are an ocean with a moveable seafloor and a moon. The tide is always coming up and down. There's high tide and low tide. However, you do not have to have chaotic waves your oceans can rise and fall peacefully. Sometimes in life, there is a storm that roughs up the water and causes the floor to become rough in turn keeping the water on top rough(things that cause waves). Most people do not know how to level their ocean floor to take away the choppy water after the storm passes. TM allows you to level out your ocean by focusing on that floor of consciousness. The chaotic thought you learn to be ok with in TM isn't you being ok with that thought it is relieving the stress of the storm.
