Taking a personality assessment for a promotion?

Okay so there was a position that was recently opened up and we were all encouraged to apply. Then we were told that we would have to take the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) if we wanted the position.

I've heard of taking it as a NEW employee to the company but we aren't and have all been here at least a year and a half. You'd think they know us by now to where we wouldn't have to do this....

I think this is absurd and thought they were joking with me at first but they are serious....

Has anyone else encountered this? I don't want to seem uncooperative and actually AM interested in the position but this is a bit much.

Getting a promotion has nothing to do with a personality test, it has to do with who you know, your networking and your connections. If you make a big issue of the test, then HR or the people looking to hire you will take that as an indication you have issues. The fact is and I have seen it many times before, that a person can be completely not the right person for a job based on a personality test, yet still get the position over a more suitable candidate because they were smart enough to participate in social activities at work, get along, go get a beer, remember a birthday, etc. etc.

Edit: I have also seen the test used as an excuse. It is a tool to be used to explain to a person why they are "not a fit" for a position so that the real reasons they are not getting the job, i.e. they complain, they don't socialize, etc. As a manager in the past, I have actually been the one to deliver the "your test shows you are not a good fit" news, when I knew very well the real reasons.

Don't sweat it...take the test...network.

This test is to sort out who are extroverts and who are introverts.

And mostly the extroverts have more chance to get a promotion unless the boss or leader of the company is more to the type of "introvert". He or she may understand more about how intelligent the introverts are, and mostly they lead with integrity not just by talking.

However, most people judge a book by its cover, especially in the business world. Therefore no matter how intelligent you are and if you don't know how to talk to sell yourself, and you don't know how to socialize, you won't be able to climb up the ladder in your company very high.

Only if you were a genius like Charles Darwin, Einstein, Thomas Edison, Bill Gate, Steve Job, Steve Wozniak, Warren Buffett, J.K. Rowling, etc., then you could be famous, and the whole world know your name and admire you.

Otherwise, you can learn from Tony Robbins or Dale Carnegie, or fake it till you make it. The last idea is not my favourite. But a number of people argue it works.

One thing for sure is that if you refuse to take this test, you won't get the promotion.

I guess I'll just follow directions and read up on the one they use from cpp. com (I tried to Google it but there is way too much out there about Myers-Briggs and MBTI) and prepare myself mentally to take this assessment. @Richard@DecisionSkills that must be a great way to get out of telling someone they didn't get the job. I didn't think about it that way which is one of the reasons I posted my question about it because I knew someone would give me a different way of looking at it.
