Spinning feelings

Postby Anthony Jacquin » Thu Oct 30, 2003 4:05 pm

I have heard a couple of references on a bandler tape and McKenna about spinning feelings - often when they are dealing with phobias. I think but do not know that this involves getting the client to trace the route of feelings as they think about the stimulus that makes them feel bad and then once it is established spinning them in the opposite direction while thinking of the stimulus. I think this is combined with EFT in some instances.

Is anyone on the forum familiar with spinning and how it can be used?

Thanks

Ant

EFT - Emotional freedom techniques - involves tapping on various meridian points around the body. Sounds like nonsense to me but is used increasingly but a whole bank of therapists i respect. have a look on the internet and you will find the official site with two large documents for free download. One is basic the other advanced. They are supposed to accompoany videos you can buy but are certainly of value in their own right.

As I say i havent used them yet but will do as soon as I have the patterns mastered.

Hi there,

I agree EFT does sound a bit barmy. That said it is healthy to be skeptical.

May I suggest visiting the site you mentioned, I can give you the link if you like, and downloading the free stuff.

I am amazed at the success but suggest you try it out for yourself and see how you get on.

Re the spinning.. tried it on the paul mcKenna course, couldnt manage it myself, but is supposed to be helpful. The EFT is v interestin, went on a day workshop and use it with anxious kids to disperse negativ emotions, also reduces cravings eg nicotine, choclit etc. V interesting stuff!

Hi Grovelli

You can spin a feeling by noticing where it starts and where it moves.

eg. sometimes I find myself in situations where I am unexpectedly asked to do something I would normally be nervous about. For me, like many people, the initial 'anxious' feeling starts in the pit of my stomach. I then find it spreads up and towards my chest. :(

I can then imagine that feeling going out through my chest, down in front of my body and back into the pit of my stomach. Imagine it continuously moving and there's your 'spinning'. You can test if you've identified the right movement/direction because if you imagine it spinning faster you'll feel worse.

Now you've got this far you can have some fun! You can imagine taking the spinning out, flipping it upside down and putting it back in so that it is effectively spinning in the opposite direction. This will immediately reduce the anxiety and the faster you spin the more it reduces.

Some people like to give the original spinning a colour and can change it to something more preferable. It doesn't have to be used with bad feelings of course, you can take a good feeling and increase the spin speed and colour of that, to increase the intensity of feeling.

Some people will be aware of more than one direction of movement, so you can just work with the one that seems strongest to them. The last person I did this with described their (bad) feeling as a dirty mushroom coloured spiral moving across their chest. :?

Just a hallucination of course - like so many things!

Take care
