Job interview shame

Postby lifeisbeautiful2 » Sun Jul 01, 2018 8:26 pm

I'm a teacher at a private school who has been trying to get a new job in a public school to advance myself. I've been on 7+ interviews and they all go relatively the same way. I'm nervous as sh** and stumble on my words and come across as incompetent. I practice the questions at home because they are often very similar but my anxiety gets the best of me when I am on the spot. (I take medication for anxiety too) I have another interview scheduled for tomorrow and I'm considering not going to it. I know i'm qualified and its great that I'm getting interviews, its just that i'm not presenting myself in a positive enough light to be considerate as a viable candidate. I'm embarrassed that I'm giving up but i don't think i can handle these situations anymore. I feel like I can't talk with anyone in my life about it because I don't want people to see how weak I am. Anyone one have a similar experience to share or advice? Thank you in advance!

Have you ever told the interviewers up front at the very beginning of the interview that you get nervous?

In other words, while teachers are expected to be comfortable communicating in front of students, people still understand the natural anxiety of interviews and fear of rejection. By acknowledging this up front in the interview it shows honesty, openness, and self deprecation.

It sounds like classic anxiety but in thread title you say you feel shame. Why is this?

Is the shame only because of your anxiety? Or perhaps there's another reason for the shame that you feel during the interview, which makes you nervous...

We need to begin talking about anxiety in a healthy way before we can manage it.

I know, we all want to manage our issues on our own without letting anybody else know about it but this simply isn't how we work.

Perhaps you should focus more on being yourself rather than who you think the interviewers want you to be. Just relax, take deep breaths, think before you answer a question, ask for clarity where you don't seem to grasp what you're being asked and always answer to the best of your knowledge. Avoid over practicing or over rehearsing your answers as though you already know which questions you're going to be asked. It's important to take every situation as it comes rather than just over playing it in your mind.

Try exercising to help clear your mind- always keep a positive attitude, know what you want in life and how you want to get it, plan ahead, know how to execute your plans and GO FOR IT!!

No one is perfect, and everyone gets week at some point in their life, so don't be hard on yourself because we all make mistakes - and from those mistakes we must learn, pick ourselves up and GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY!! I know you are capable of getting the job you want, all you need to have is a positive state of mind.

Good luck!!

I get nervous if I have to take tests for a job application. Which is stupid, because I've been in admin work for over 20 years now in many corporate office environments. I don't know why I get nervous. I'm not scared, and I'm not apprehensive or anything, but taking a test.....well, I usually flunk it even though I can do this work "in my sleep".

From my past experiences with people getting and giving interviews, I would say that you need to stop thinking of it as an interview and more like just going to have a chat with a friend.

Being nervous is part of the psychology of interviewing, and any professionally trained manger or HR person will know this and overlook it.

Aside from that, why would you want to go "public" when I've been told by many teachers that working "private" is so much better?
