Panic Attacks

Postby eileen » Tue Mar 16, 2004 3:53 pm

Hello,

Does any one have any thoughts on my panic attacks. Every day I wake up and start to panic. By the time I get to work I am in the full throes of an attack. I spend the rest of the day trying to get myself down. This has been going on for two weeks now. My GP has given me sertraline 25mg for the first week then 50mg a day after that.

I have had panic attacks in the past and I know I am under more stress than usual at the moment. But I don't seem to be able to cope at all this time. I have just started the email course, but am very impatient!!

Hello Eileen, and welcome to the forums!

I can see why you might be impatient! Good that you have started the email course!

While getting going on with that, you could practise 7/11 breathing (breathe in to count of 7, out to count of 11, so outbreath about twice as long as inbreath). Start when you wake up, do several rounds before getting out of bed, and do more rounds whenever panicky feelings disturb you. Nobody need know!

What do you generally do to relax?

Keep well

Hi Eileen

The email course is exactly the same as what is online here, so you can go through it all now! :D

The important thing, of course, is to put it into practise.

I hope it helps and the best of luck to you

Hi,

some would call this a panic attack, some general anxiety. Neither is particularly useful to you. The good news is that there is every chance you can put this behind you completely.

There is a reason for the panicky feelings. Consciously you have probably thought about this for a while and may or not know what that reason is. May not know what to do. Whatever you think you know, I can assure you you do know at some level how you can change this. And that is all you need to get above it all

Breathing will certainly help you cope, but when you have coped long enough I suggest you get some support from a professional who can help you change timely and easily.

I dont know whether its best for you to make the big or small changes first you can do so today to ease your stress do you?

Thanks to all who posted. I am at last begining to understand the effects of anxiety and am able to work on the negative thoughts which is giving me relief from the treadmill of panic.

I am actually looking forward to learning more and putting it into practise.
