struggling with hypnosis!!

Postby lucid » Mon Feb 09, 2004 8:16 am

Hi all,

I need some help here. Struggling hypnosis student here. I've been practising to hypnotize people as to get more experience and have not had much success. Had a brakethrough the on thursday though when I discovered that my own brother was one of the small percentage that goes down deep and quicj too. Imagine the joy i had when he went down so easily ....it was wonderful! I hypnotized him twice on that day with no problems whatsoever, each time he went down in a matter of minutes and deep as well. Then on friday when I tried he said he hadn't slepped well the night before and he just fell asleep both times as I tried to put him under. On saturday and sunday it just didn't work at all. After each Induction he just opened his eyes, copletely awake and aware just as he had been before he closed his eyes. maybe just a little sleepy. Is there a factor I'm missing here? This is really annoying as you can imagine,..just as I thought I would have such a great subject in the family to experiment on!!! :( I learned that the more you get hypnotized the better you get at going under. This is correct isn't it? If so why is is simply not working with him anymore? And why do some people simply seem not to be affected at all by an induction! I know that if you resist in any way then nothing will happen. But some of my subjects seem genuinely willing and try their best but they just don't go under and seem unaffected by the induction. I'm sure that I'm doing everything right on my side. But you never know right!

I'd really appreciate any advice/help anyone can give me! You can imagine how frustrating this is for me!

Thanx in advance...

Regards....

Hiya Lucid

I remember when I was first learning hypnosis I struggled quite a bit at the begining. What really helped though was lots of practise with as many different people as possible - it sounds like you are doing that already.

Something that helped me was to notice what works with other people who can hypnotise and try and imitate them, and also to write out as many scripts as you can with as many indirect suggestions as you can think of.

Hope this helps.

Thanx Joe!

Practise practise practise! That's what everybody keeps telling me!
Guess that's the only way to go. it's just so frustrating sometimes though as I'm sure you know as well!!

Any other sugestions/advise people?

Tell me something....Is it possible that easy to hypnotize subjects can suddenly change into the un-hypnotizable ? I have such a case at the moment. This person was so easy to hypnotize, literally within a few moments. and now it's not working at all! Any ideas? Might it be resistance in some way. Normally subjects should go easier under the more they get hypnotized. Or is this not so?

Hi Lucid

Is this person willing to be hypnotised?

Can you post the script that you are using (if you're using one that is)

Hey Joe,

Sorry for the delay. I basically use the hand fixation type script that ends with the sleep formula.\ (sugesstions og feeling sleepy and going to sleep etc.) What imduction works best for you? I'm tried the Elman induction (with counting back from 100) but haven't had much luck with that one.

lemme know what you think,

many thanx

HI Lucid

You may like to try getting a bit more flexible with your approach - this is what will help you work with a wider variety of people and be able to fit your hypnosis to the individual. The type of problem you are describing illustrates why scripts are such a limiting way to work.

You could try out our free hypnosis course to see if that helps.

All the best

I would aggree with Roger - the online course is excellent.

Also, see if you can find some scripts by Michael Yapko and Stephen Brooks, both of whom work with indirect hypnosis.

Hi,

One of the resources (on top of the diploma) that I found very useful last year was a video called "Training in indirect hypnosis by Stephen Brooks"

It costs around £30, and is excellent value for money. You also get a 50 page book with it which explains what he is doing at each stage of the recording.

I have watched it about 10 times altogether, and still get something new from it on each viewing.

You can buy it from the Anglo American book company.

I agree with the advice about flexibility and being more indirect with your communication. I appreciate you have to use scripts when you are getting started unless you have an incredible knack for spontaneous hypnotic emissions. By far the best book I can recommend is 'Hypnotherapy Scripts' by Ron Havens. It is a superb tomb of inductions, genral use stuff, metaphors for specific dicciculties and direct suggestions.. If you are at the stage of just doing the induction then, you will find it worth its weight in gold.

The book starts with a clear explanation of an 'Ericksonian' approach to healing. This will set you up with a very simple diagnostic approach to framing the problem. The inductions are written in a very practical flexible style incorporating many langaueg paterns you will have learnt about but without mentioning sleep or anything approaching getting in a lift or walking down some steps. Once you have one or two mastered you will find it easier to be spontaneous. There is a conversational induction, one ofr arm levitation and my favourite when i started out one for a noisy environment. Its a great book, no doubt about it.

I really think that many scripts just go too direct too soon, saying sleepy and eyes heavy, if they do not feel sleepy or have heavy eyes is just going to ensure you lose any rapport you have taken time to build. Must better to say and you can notice your eyes as you become aware of your breathing, and sooner or later everyone has dozed off with sounds around them...

Let me know if you have any questions....

Thanx a mil Anthony!

That was some great advice you gave me!

And thanx to the others that replied. I understand what it is that you're trying to explain to me. I'm still new in the hypnotherapy field, and just trying to learn as much as I can!!

Once again, thanx a mil!!!
