I am depressed

Postby Astoach » Thu Mar 22, 2018 6:47 am

I have applied to several universities and I just could not wait anymore for the application outcome which will be out in about a month's time. I need the outcome to be successful so that I can tell my boss that I need to resign to prepare for my studies. I really hate my job but I have caring colleagues, which is why I found it hard to just say "I want to quit" to them before my application outcome.

I have initially applied for a specialist diploma and was successful in order to quit my job but it was unsuccessful because I was persuaded to stay as the course is for working adults, so it would be abrupt to say "I want to quit" afterwards,

So now I am trying out another way and that is to apply for universities, and now I have waited for a week and I cannot take it anymore. I am depressed.. I need someone to talk to me..

A week isn't anywhere near long enough for university admin to sort through your application. You'll have to grit your teeth and carry on until you get their reply. This kind of situation is going to come to you many times in your adult life, and you'll discover that acting in haste causes problems. Stick with it and visualise the outcome you want.

By the way, hating your job is not a good reason to take up study. You need to be really passionate about your chosen subject to get through the obstacle course that's ahead if your application is successful.

I wish you luck!

That is a frustrating situation to be in. Today's world is fast-paced and saturated with and instant gratification mindset. We are fed information, food, shopping, the internet, TV, and almost everything on an instant basis when we are told to wait for something, it is frustrating! The thing is, you can use this opportunity learn something many people do not have today but it is a quality that professors and employers want: Patience. Showing restraint and patience in tough situations shows that you are a strong and competent person. As for waiting, try to distract yourself with activities that you enjoy. Time passes a lot faster when we are doing things that we enjoy. Good luck!

You've really got the cart before the horse here. First, do you need this job? Is the income something your depend on or is this trivial revenue because you still live at home? Most people work jobs because they need the money. Kids work jobs sometimes because of their parents trying to teach them responsibility.

Are you applying to these schools as an excuse to leave your job or do you actually have an earnest interest in these universities? I'm asking because the only thing I hear is you hating your job and you need an excuse to leave. Instead of looking for an excuse, how about you sit down and center yourself? What do you want to do? What direction do you want to take? No one expects you to have a career lined up, but is there a sincere direction you would like to explore?

The key here is to not focus on running FROM something so much as aligning your thinking to what your walking TOWARDS. If you honestly have that figured out, then prepare yourself for the near future instead of making yourself miserable obsessing over a pointless job that has an expiration date. I truly doubt it matters to you what a few "caring" work associates think, when all of you will forget one another six months from now.

Be honest with yourself. Quit pretending that extenuating circumstances are keeping you from doing what you want to do. You hate your job. I get it. But don't run to another place you will equally hate when the environment no longer satisfies your next itch. Figure out what you earnestly want to do and apply yourself, instead of looking for the next pleasure dome. Work and study are a discipline. Trust the process and apply yourself.
