What causes depression?

Postby Toam » Sun Feb 01, 2004 10:15 am

I'm sure this question gets asked alot, and I'm sure you can dodge the question by saying how complex the mind is (which is true) and that it can't be answered so simply.

However, through generalizing I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what it is that causes people to be depressed.

Hi Tommy, welcome to the forum.
I think this might help answer your question in a pretty exhaustive way.

Thanks.

It wasn't quite what I was after, but helpful none the less.

Also, I could have done without being called "Tommy"

Hi Toam

Can you tell us what you were looking for?

And I think Grovelli was only trying to be helpful - a simple mistake.

You're welcome. I saw your MSN messenger handle said Tommy so I thought that was your name. Sorry if using that makes you uncomfortable.

Oh, no thats all fine.

My msn address does say tommy but its a nickname that some kid came up with one time and the only time I ever get called Tommy is when it is followed by "two stroke" (which is to do with petrol, which i have to explain an awful lot).

I was reading a page about depression, and since I'm inquisitive I looked it up and was linked here. I was quite happy to be linked to a foum as opposed to a website since it has been my experience that when you search the internet for anything, you find things either far too basic or far to advanced for what you need. I'd just go to the library as I find that much more efficient, but I can't get to a library right now and I'm also somewhat impatient... So here I am.

I didn't mean to sound ungrateful for grovelli's response, like it said it was helpful (as in i read the page and found it interesting) but wasnt quite what I was looking for.

If you look at the page I was reading (which you may well find offensive) maybe you will understand what I'm after. Essentially I'm after any existing theory on what causes depression as a sort of how and why thing.

If you are offended by the above site I wouldn't bother telling the author sine you will just end up in the hatemail section and being ridiculed. And although that would probably ammuse me the next time I was at that site, since you seem good friendly people I wouldn't want you to end up in the hatemail section, since most people in there are moronic.
If you are offended by it, you might want to check out my response to it in the forum at the same site:

Since, personally, I think that what I said there should have been included in the page (since it makes it far less negative and far more realistic)

I have this problem alot when I don't know anything about something. My questions are too broad and difficult for me to refine.
