Rape effecting body image

Postby wrecked » Wed Mar 19, 2014 6:34 pm

Im 17 years old and up until last December my stepfather had been raping me since I was 13. I struggle with periods of starvation, binging, and continuous dieting. I know rape victims have distorted body images and I really want to get over this I just dont know how.

Hi, I am so sorry for what happened, though pleased you are speaking out.

Yes, I understand it is quite common for survivors to experience body image issues - some people try to hide behind layers of unflattering clothes or put on weight in a vain attempt in preventing it from happening again, others, as you are experiencing, starve, diet and binge.

I think therapy would be a good place to start. I find having a goal attached to physical activity helpful as it takes energy and good nutrition to accomplish it, though I would strongly advise you to begin therapy before you do this.

Take care. He was very, very, wrong to do this to you and you deserve all the happiness in the world.

You absolutely 100% don't deserve for that to have happened to you. You need to know how strong & capable you are. I was at an inpatient Eating Disorders unit & although I have a different situation to you, one thing that my key nurse would say to me relates to this. What does not eating, binging, purging or over exceeding change? Real life events happen and some are good and some are not - but changing eating habits and connecting those events to your body image doesn't actually change what happened, it's horrible that you've had to go through that - be a fighter & don't let this effect the rest of your life anymore, an Eating Disorder is not the way to go simply because visualising your emotions towards an event or yourself does not and will not ever change anything no matter how much we may want them to.

Keep strong beautiful xxx

Be strong and talk to a Psychologist. They can help you. A close relative also.

I recommend you contact a women's aid agency and arrange to talk to someone there. They will be all too familiar with this crime and its effects, and have access to the best resources. If you decide to have your stepfather charged, a specialist counsellor would be able to advise you every step of the way and accompany you to court if necessary.

About 80 per cent of women with eating disorders were abused in precisely this way.

Hi

Its quite brave of you to come over here and say something like this. Many individuals, simply go through life never admitting it. As much as we all love you, I do suggest you get professional help. Not because there is something wrong with you, but just to ensure you get the best support possible. I can and will give you support here or if you PM me, HOWEVER i do suggest you get professional help of a great, kind , listener.

Thank you for sharing. I hope legal action has already started against your stepfather. You do not deserve any of this, but you have to stay strong - not many can take it, but YOU can!

Hey, it is so unfair what happened to you!
I think that you should not let him get away with this. If you have a chance then I would advise you to bring him to justice so that he will punished for what he did to you!
About the eating disorder: Did you ever have a look at Overeaters Anonymous?
A friend of mine found freedom from bulimia by going there regularly and working and living the twelve steps that these people use to overcome their problems.
Stay strong and donĀ“t give up!
