Drug counseling

In order to wrap up some of my necessary hours for graduation I'm also being assigned to work at a rehab clinic. In contrast to working with teens with broad problems I'm working with junkies and court ordered criminals and its not my favorite. no one thinks they have a problem, alot of them are going through the motions to please the court or are unrealistic during the counseling sessions.

what should my goals be with 'clients' that dont see their drug problem as a problem? I can only meet these people where they are at , but have to 'help' them in some way some how.

The goal then, at the abstract superordinate level, is to work towards the client seeing drug use as a problem. This of course is the very goal that you say clients refuse or are most resistant to acknowledging.

Therefore, subordinate goals would be to get very specific in identifying any problem they face and then reverse engineer that problem back to the use of drugs.

For instance, no job, no friends, sleep issues, health issues, anger, no sex drive, etc. might be smaller goals that eventually you can tie back to drug use.

I'd suggest you look at your own values and attitudes because Junkies is dehumanising and shouldn't be used to refer to someone. Look at the person behind the substance because then you may understand how they arrived where they are.
