Can't hand in work, suffering for it

Postby armarose » Tue Oct 14, 2014 11:30 pm

i'm currently a college student, and all my life i've had a problem with handing in my work. i've never really heard about anyone else having trouble with it, so i never got any advice, and i'm not really sure how to go about dealing with it, or even asking for help.

procrastination is something else i've been trying to overcome, but this trouble has almost nothing to do with that. usually, i'll have an assignment completely finished––i could feel good about it or not, doesn't really matter––but something just keeps me from turning it in. there are times where its in my bag, nice and neat, ready for the teacher on the day its due, and i just won't do it.

it makes me feel incredibly sick too. i get panicky and i obsess over the fact that i've had this paper or whatever done, all i have to do is send an email, put it on their desk, whatever. but instead of just doing it, i agonize to the point where i'm sick to my stomach, and this usually leads me to stop doing my work in that class altogether.

its really stupid, and i'm so mad at myself. i want to put an end to this issue once and for all . . . or at least know that i'm not the only one who experiences this. anyone who has any advice or insight, i'd really appreciate it.

thank you, but i'm not really sure i understand how that is the problem i'm having. and either way, i'm not really comforted by a simple label... but i do appreciate the concern.

The label is a starting point. "If you can name it you can ban it."

It also tends to change a "matter of opinion" into "a matter of fact" (the third option, "a matter of value" does not apply here) - i.e., people who don't know you are describing your conduct and so they are presumably impartial.

It's not stupid, there must be a good reason why turning in work affects you so much. It sounds like it could be a trigger, because your emotional reaction appears to be out of proportion to the situation.

Are you concerned about grades? Is schooling the only place where you experience this problem?

Honestly its very hard to tell just by what you write but it seems that you might be a very shy, sensetive person inside. If its true , usually people like that have very hard time dealing with some of the most basic stuff, anxieties arise quickly and people are scared. I am sure you are afraid of something if you are not giving in your work (which is done).

Before i give any more input i want to make sure i understand this correctly. So what you have to do to give in your work is you have to email teacher and then after class you can leave your work on his table. Is that correct? Or is there any other actions you have to do? Also i guess it would be good to know if you experience this in any other circumstances.

Why don't you give yourself a BIG treat after not procrastinating? For example, after emailing 10 homeworks you can buy yourself those cool earphones you saw at the mall... put yourself goals and after achieving them you can treat yourself. It could help you writing down how many homeworks/papers etc. have you e-mailed and think about the big treat you're gonna give yourself like

Homeworks/Times i decided not to procrastinate
1- :checked
2- checked
3. checked
4. checked
5...
6....
and so on on the very bottom  TREAT: the t-shirt i liked at Wal- mart (LOL)
You can try if you want, hope that works for you!

if the question is how to overcome procrastination, there are my thoughts:

just start doing this NOW. Especially when I need to do something which I am lazy to - I start at the morning, when I have more energy.

Also once I have done it, then I do what I feel pleasure, like gaming or reading facebook.

If I do gaming first, then I am not really relaxed because I am worried that I will still need to do the task. So I prefer gaming when I am not worrying.

Also do not create super big goals help me. Make small steps which are achievable. Otherwise if the goal is too big, it feels like its is imposible and exhausting.

Also by doing somethign little once you have a habbit to do it, it becomes easier to increase if you really need to do more. For example with sports - I was lazy doing sports and found no real benefit. One day I started to believe that many girls like guys who are in ok shape.
THen I started doing it 2 times a week for half an hour each time.

Now it looks not so difficult and also I want to improve my body shape, feels like if I would really need, I could add more time to my sports schedule. So it feels easier than from zero.

I have the same problem completing assignments but mine is mostly due to demotivation and the fear of failure. It could probably be that you're afraid of failing and this fear is so paralyzing that it's subconsciously making you react in that way. For me, sometimes I feel so afraid of failing that I procrastinate to the point of not completing or not handing in the assignment at all. I'm a final year student and I having been suffering with what you're talking about for years. Hope this helps

When we have had enough of suffering, we let go of fear, everything happens at the perfect time
