Selective Eating Disorder

Postby Sophie44 » Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:02 pm

I have a very close friend of whom is incredibly fussy. Please note - when I say fussy I mean it! He eats; meat, fish, bread and potatoes; that's it except sweets and chocolate. He despises sauce and when puts anything sauce related into his mouth he cannot eat it without heaving - he says it's due to the texture and it makes him feel sick.

Just so you can get a jist of it, we ordered pizza once because HE wanted to and he was craving it...he got it and said it smelt great; he then put it into his mouth and spat it out, he said the sauce made him feel sick and there you go a whole pizza is wasted (bearing in mind hes very hungry!).

I need help! He doesn't see it as an issue as he's grown up like it but not eating any vegetables or fruit worries me and I was hoping someone could help!

Thanks!

Sophie :)

Suggest he take supplements (vitamins) to get nutrients. Changing his tastes/diet will be a monumental task, especially if he does not see it as an issue. You can occasionally introduce a small side dish for him or provide a taste of something new, but if I were him and it was a constant case of you trying to change me then it would just irritate me and so eventually we would no longer be spending time together.

Thanks for your reply!

You are very right about pushing him away and irritating him - it's the last thing I want to do! I will have to talk to him about vitamins.

He does want to change for himself I know he does because it must be frustrating! I have heard that someone on here can help with therapist sessions - just need to get a few posts on here before I can message him - maybe hoping to find alternative help too!

Thanks again!

We can't change the way other people think, we can choose our response to them, we can choose forgiveness, we can choose acceptance of who they are and we can surrender to their individuality, this is the rent that we pay on any relationship, is the rent worth paying?

I've had this problem since I was about 3 or 4. 80% of what I eat is peanut butter sandwiches and milk... and I'm 22. I get questioned a lot by it and a lot of time I don't find it to be a problem. Perhaps for me personally I find the biggest effects of it are I don't have food conversations. That may be a good or bad thing, though I end up having an even more fun conversation: "Have you ever tried this? NO WAY! You've never had PIZZA? I can't believe it!." The conversation lasts as long as they can think of good foods they like.

I try to take vitamins every day but sometimes I forget. I often fear that I will die young because of my eating habits... it's not really based on anything, I've never searched "Can you die from only eating peanut butter sandwiches" on google... though I probably will after posting this. This is not really something I TRY to do, it happens naturally. I go months without thinking about it.

My uncle has suggested that maybe I have more taste buds than most people, which sounds plausible. The main reason I don't eat much of these foods is that they are purely disgusting to me; whether it's just a terrible texture or bad smell or taste. And a peanut butter sandwich tastes like.... hmmm it tastes like an angel crafted the perfect food and cut the crusts off for me. I do eat other things but they all fail in comparison to it, though the list is extremely small. Pancakes would have to be a close second.

Anyway... if anyone has more to add to this I'd be very interested to read about it.
