Money Cured My Depression.

Postby ChessPlayer » Tue Jul 30, 2019 11:41 am

Hello everyone,

For years I was depressed and working day in and day out. I went to the doctors who gave me escitalopram 10mg and I have been on them for 3 years. However, I have come into some money (£300k) and my reality and my life has changed for the better, for the good and forever.

My goal now is to build a living unit that is off the grid and completely self-sustainably.

I feel sorry for those people who are poor and depressed. That must be hell. IMO, money cures depression because it provides freedom in life to a high degree. Money changed my external environment, my outlook, my options, my living conditions and overall improved the quality of my life. I now look forward to what I can do with life, the endless range of choices I can now make. Money, in this reality, is power and freedom.

Turn on, tune in, drop out.
A place where nobody talks about politics, religion or traditional values but a free place with nature in love with who I am, with what I do, and my environment.

The mind is endless, it's the universe in there, there's a world in there, and I'm free.

Plenty of millionaires are depressed. Plenty of people in poverty are happy.

Studies show that money does have an impact on happiness, with the law of diminishing returns. As a person has enough for basic needs, there is a diminishing level of being “more happy”.

If you believe that money has “cured” your depression, good for you. That is great. I hope you manage your money well.

My life has exploded into many different and various areas due to the fact I have vast wealth and abundance. Meeting new people and getting involved in business projects (my main one at the moment is building an "off-the-grid habitat-eco-system" I eat better and get the best of foods that support my body and mind. Life, from my perspective, has no limits now. I can't go back to having no money, that life is hell. The comparison from what my life was to what is now is completely different.

Good feedback Richard.

Awesome.

For over 7 years, I have been living a minimal lifestyle, using the grid to work online while traveling all over the world. A digital business weighs relatively nothing. I do not require an office, just a wifi connection. I live comfortably with few material possessions. Wealth is digital these days, no longer tied to a physical currency, e.g. gold.

On £300k, without making a single £, I could live happily for 20 years. It is not poverty, it is minimalism in a digital world.

I wish you well with the project. Eco systems off the grid with the best of foods is an expensive endeavor. Let us know how it goes.

I travel a lot now myself. I couldn't before when I had no money. Life is so different with money. So many new and wonderful experiences, places to go, things to do...I honestly don't have time to be depressed anymore. My advice to people who are depressed get money, get lots of money and your life will change for the better. That is just my advice.

And my advice is similar...to get active, because it is only through being active that you might offer others something of value that will translate into “getting” anything, including money.

Money give me the opportunity to be active in a large degree. Before I was active but my options were limited to certain things and places and certain roles I could take on.

I feel confident and wonderful. I am building my own sanctuary. My own paradise away from society. Money made this happen for me. I am blessed. I have many slaves now working on my dream.

Money and happiness... always an interesting topic.
I appreciate your post on this.

Almost everyone is aware of the many examples of people who came into money when they had none, stories of how the presence of that new money ruined their lives. Lottery winners, those who inherit large sums, etc.

Amazing how often that situation ends in debt, depression, and even suicide.

And it seems that it's easy for many to believe that "money cannot buy happiness". I am dealing with the loss of a large sum which was the result of years of extreme sacrifice and effort. I made a stupid mistake and friends of 25 years stole it from me.

For me, my savings represented the same as you describe, freedom from worry, freedom of choice. Just as I gained it and was near ending the insane pace I pursued to earn the money, it was taken from me just like that. Age, and a congenital vision problem prevent me from pursuing the same work as I once did.

Depression doesn't begin to describe it.
I am working at a 3-year effort to re-tool my life and career so I can start over, but there are days it all seems impossible.

The friends who stole from me live in a modest, but very nice home in a desirable area here in the U.S.
I lived in temporary places and resident motels all the years I was working to earn that money, and now I have no where to live.

I am living on the final ~ 20 percent of my remaining savings while working on my current re-tooling effort. I may fail to succeed before my remaining savings is depleted, in which case I will be totally indigent, after years of working the equivilent of more than 2 super-demanding full-time jobs. If that happens, I seriously doubt I will be able to forego suicide.

ChessPlayer, I hope you will find the means to make that money work for your well-being for the remainder of your years. Remember that many people will be envious of you and if you allow them to do so, will try to take it from you. Trust no one.

ChessPlayer,
In regard to my attempt in the previous post,
To my perception, the fact that having more money results in your personal choice to seek better nutrition, better quality of daily diet would give me to believe that you have the sort of healthy self-interest that will probably enable you to make the most of your present better fortune.
I will hope that it is so for you.

I've lost almost all belief in the 'meaning and purpose' of this human life, but I do believe that personal freedom is everything, and your post on this topic is encouraging and uplifting for me personally.

I have not given up all hope, and my belief in self-determination is at the core of what little hope I have remaining.

Take good care of yourself ChessPlayer, and enjoy every second of this life to the greatest possible extent.

The world is an ugly and wicked place, and human beings are the most dangerous animals on earth.
But more money = more freedom, and with rational intellect, healthy self-interest, and a little luck you can keep the monsters in check.

One has to wonder if that person is broke now. Money is but one tool to obtaining some goals in life. And depending on what your goals are, play heavily on how much money you need to help you get there. It's like putting gas in your car. Half a tank will get you to the grocery store and back, but it won't drive you across three states.

But the one factor I have come to understand about money is this... To have money is to understand how to hold on to it. The author of this thread clearly never understood how to cultivate income so he/she had no understanding on how to maintain it. Now suddenly awash with a little bit of money, all of these grandiose ideas come pouring in and... well there goes the money.

Its the age old rule. You can never respect money if you never had to earn it. Once you earn it and grow it, then you respect it, because you understand the discipline it takes to have it. And that applies to any income level. My daughter can get a tax refund of two thousand dollars and be broke in a week. Its a vicious cycle if you don't understand the process. Most people work for money. A wise person grows that money until it starts working for them.

different people have different reasons to get back.

So yeah if someone's reason for being depressed is financial issues then yeah Money might help him out.
