Is it ok not to give copyrighted product to your friend?

Hello,

I remembered a situation when I lost my internet friend who was friend for few years after I did not share to him the content which I paid for.

The situation was this - I have hired a coach to teach me some things. And that coach gave me some videos and pdfs which are not for free - but they are included in the coaching package.

And that friend asked for pdfs. I really respected that coach. Plus I could not trust 100 % that somehow the coach will not find out that I shared his content to others and he might get angry and not coach me well. Yea, maybe this is small probability. But still I wanted to be good to the coach, I valued his work.

That friend was hard to talk with often because he did not like to argue and said what I think is wrong, but I did not udnerstand why it is wrong, so I blindly did not want to listen to him.

So the fact that I did not share the content alone might not be the one reason that he deleted my contacts. But it was one of the reasons.

So now what to do in same situation next time? If I share contect which is not suposed to be shared, do I again make friend angry at me and I risk losing that friend? I just bought a book from one guy who I also respect for his free contents and he asked in this book to not share with others because this is premium content. I practically bouth this book to support him. And if I share this book - I do the opposite - especially if my friend shares to his friends, those friends to more friends, and some of them share publicly on the internet.

As discussed in another topic and the argument was that bill gates is billiionaire and for him does not matter - this book author is far from being billionaire, maybe he does not have even a million.

Never share copyrighted content, no matter how wealthy you perceive the individual or the company. It is not a victimless crime.

Stealing is never free. And you don't steal from Bill Gates. Instead, you steal from every other person that now has to pay Bill Gates an extra $25 because to make up for the theft the price of the product has to be raised up in order to make the product worth producing. I now have to pay more if I want a Microsoft product...thanks for stealing from me!

Don't get me wrong. I'm as guilty as the next person. I have not gone through life never taking advantage of a copyrighted product, a knock off, or finding a free or pirated version. I feel bad about that. I rationalized and used the same twisted logic to make myself better that you have presented.

There is only one condition when I would say it is okay to share a copyrighted product, but that is not for this conversation.

Any friend that deletes you because you refuse to steal for them is not a real friend.

Edit: BTW, the appropriate response to a friend is to say, "It is copyrighted, so let me check with the author first." A friend should understand that. And it is pretty easy to contact many of the authors. Write an email to them and they might say it is okay to share with just your friend, etc. It might take some work to get a free or greatly reduced price for a copy of a product from a big organization, but even then with some effort you can find a way. It is just that we are lazy and don't want to put forth any effort, so we steal instead.

interesting ideas, and I am surprised that you said that he is not a friend if he deletems because I do not steal. Thank you.

About company like microsoft I am not sure if you really have to pay as much as everybody steal from it. It might be that the product would cost even more if there would be more buyers because - why not to take extra money if everybody is paying? And to create a product maybe even now it would be enough to sell it for lets say half price even with those pirates stealing, but if non pirates are paying, why not take current price? Business aims to maximize price usually, unless it wants to sell cheaper or for free to get more users and sell something later to them once they trust the company.
