Becoming jaded about hypnosis

Postby Caliray » Tue Feb 28, 2017 12:36 pm

I've bought quite a few mp3 recordings from big name hypnotherapists that claim to help in making life altering changes. I've listened many hours, especially to one that claims to teach a person to self hypnotize. If this is working I have no evidence of it nor any definitive proof that I'm in trance. I really want this to work but am concerned that it isn't and won't work for me. Any suggestions?

You must have set for ourselves to come up with hypnosis script. The best way listen your favorite music and immerse yourself into a trance. Can I ask why you need hypnosis? To be happy hypnosis is not needed. And hypnosis does not work if you are happy man.

Asking why I want to learn hypnosis and self hypnotize is a little like asking someone if they finally stopped beating their wife. It's a question with no correct answer.

(Gosh, I haven't visited in a while...)

Absolutely, it's kind of an unfair question. It's obvious that you want to make some changes in your life, and it's just as understandable that you'd like a little help from something as awesome sounding as hypnosis. Let's just take that as it is and go from there, right?

Here's the problem: to sell MP3 recordings, you have to try and convince people that your product is going to work. Realistically, however, there are always people for which the structure and approach taken in a recording doesn't work well, and many recordings are awfully similar in many ways. If your way of thinking clashes with how the recordings are trying to get you into a hypnotic state, they're not going to help you much until you get more practice at actually experiencing trance for real.

So, for many people these recordings might actually work just fine, but that doesn't mean everyone. To make things worse, the more serious something you want to change is, and the more time you spend thinking about the negative aspects of the way things are going right now, the easier it becomes to distract yourself out of any hypnotic state because your mind will tend to go back to that thinking.

What can you do instead? First off, if you can't find a provider of recordings who offers a free demo that clearly does something for you (even if it's just an experience of trance with no other primary goal), don't buy. Secondly, look into doing it all by yourself. Self-hypnosis is fairly straightforward if you don't spend too much time worrying whether you're "really in a trance". For quite a while you won't be while you go through the process you pick, and even when you start getting the hang of it you probably won't notice at first because the experience is quite subtle. If you don't let any of that stop you, I guarantee you that you'll find a way eventually.

The other part is figuring out what suggestions to give yourself. There are three simple rules: firstly, suggestions work best if they're in an if/then format: if I'm in situation X, I do/think/feel Y. This is because the mind works in terms of associations, and this format of suggestion piggybacks onto situation X so you have a much better chance of it actually "taking". Secondly, focus not on what you want to get rid of; instead focus on what you want instead. If you don't know for sure, focus on a rough direction instead. Thirdly, be careful what you wish for. It's better to make smaller changes at first than to overcompensate -- as they say, anything done in excess is harmful. (Incidentally, smaller changes are easier to make at first, too.)

One more note: suggestions don't need to be sentences. Do whatever feels right, whatever kind of mental processing you normally do. Think words or don't, make pictures in your head or don't, conjure up sounds or feelings or don't. Do whatever you can do effortlessly, don't think about the specifics too much. A richer representation is better (e.g. words plus images + sounds + feelings in the body), but it's much more important to have it feel effortless than to have it richer.

Good luck!

this only makes sense if you state it like following:

asking someone if they finally stopped beating their wife
..... knowing that this man never ever has beaten his wife before.

Then you speak in fallacies. (many people do btw)

If the culprit man above answers the questions with
1) yes .... I will stop beating my wife --> he admits actually he has beaten his wife
2) no ........ I wil not stop beating my wife then he admits he will continue beating his wife.

But what connection does the fallacy actually have with learning hypnosis or self-hypnosis?

One technique I was taught that seems really simple is to hypnotize yourself in a mirror. Basically, you look at yourself in a mirror, and you go through the hypnotic process like you would with a client, but you're basically hypnotizing yourself. It may or may not work for you, but it's a really cheap option if it does

Hypnosis is perfect on a happy man. We are all about continuous improvement. A happy man can still have fears, phobias, stress, anxiety, and numerous other issues. He can still want more success, a promotion, or to make an Olympian team. So that's just silly. Hypnosis is very just about every one.

I agree. I also believe self-hypnosis is the most powerful tool, provided you're dedicated about it.

I agree, Candid. I can easily do self-hypnosis tapes, but nothing is ever as good as a great hypnotist
who addresses your unique issues with a fresh mind. Then you get to sit back and let go and allow the magic to happen.

It's part of my credo that we're all hypnotised by the world we find ourselves in, and that we self-hypnotise (without realising it) with the things we tell ourselves about ourselves. I pick people up when they say "I'm no good at xyz", "I can't do abc", "people don't like me", "I'll never get a decent job" etc. I believe we need to bring these unproductive ideas to consciousness, challenge them, and at the risk of sounding cheesy, use good-old affirmations to counteract them.

I don't think that's what's meant by self-hypnosis in this thread. DaveDDM's suggestion of mirror work is more my speed -- and, as he says, it doesn't cost anything. I've bought Paul McKenna CDs and his subliminal stuff just doesn't touch what ails me.

I saw a hypnotist for several months. She would get me into a relaxed state then repeat something like "I can have a drink any time I like, but I don't want one now". Whenever she did that -- and I've never believed drinking is an issue for me -- I would lie there thinking; "Hmm, I could pick up a bottle on the way home." And I usually did, too -- so obviously that didn't have the desired effect.

When something's bothering me I figure out what it is and make my own affirmations, sometimes graduated ones if it's too big a jump from where I am to where I want to be.

Just my five cents. Oh, and I don't think we need to be in a "trance" for self-hypnosis to work. Our conscious beliefs are what matter.
