Hypnosis works better for some people than others. I'm one of the unlucky ones. I've found that a live session with a real hypnotist does help a lot, and practice makes it easier.

By any chance, do you have difficulty focusing on things that you don't enjoy for long periods of time?

Could you be more specific? You're trying instant inductions ... on whom? How are you doing it? What makes you conclude they are not working? Have you had better luck with other inductions?

Inductions are very, very, very, VERY easy -- except instant inductions. If you're new to hypnosis, I'd recommend saving instant inductions for later.

Instant inductions only save about a minute or two if you were using a rapid induction like the Dave Elman induction, and four or five minutes if you were using something slower.

Personally, I don't do instant inductions anymore because some clients don't like them, and I use one or another variant of the Dave Elman induction.

In my opinion, the main thing is to throw in another deepener whenever you aren't sure the client is deep enough, and also just before any suggestions you think are particularly important. Any deepener will act as a new induction on a willing client who wasn't ready to go into hypnosis a minute ago.

With practice, you'll be able to tell if a subject has entered hypnosis. What's hard is convincing the subject that they were in hypnosis. Some people can go into a deep state of somnambulism, pass every test, have their problems vanish, become amnestic for the entire session, and STILL be unconvinced!

Sorry, I think I misread this thread as being about self-hypnosis not working.

But yes, try real inductions, as Robert says. Also, I highly recommend you start out by hypnotizing people on the web site Omegle -- just put your interest as "hypnosis". If you do a bad job, you can disconnect and no one will ever know it was you, so there are no consequences. Also, many of the subjects on Omegle are very experienced at going under for text hypnosis, and will go under easily. This will allow you a gradual learning curve, and will allow you to build up your confidence at doing inductions.

Bear in mind that you will never be able to hypnotize absolutely everyone. People with certain mental conditions cannot be hypnotized, and there will always be that one subject who thinks you look exactly like her abusive father, or something like that, and will never be able to relax in your presence.

What I'm saying is that it's ok to fail to put someone under. All of us do. In fact, all of us will eventually have the experience where we try everything we've got and fail, and then another hypnotist succeeds in a matter of minutes. It doesn't mean that we're bad hypnotists -- it just means that certain subjects respond better to certain hypnotists, and we were just poor matches for those particular subjects.

I am no professional, but as far as I know, instant inductions will not make you any good if you are new to hypnosis. Instant inductions are used by stage hypnotist and professionals. Instant induction is used in the case when subject is used to work with you. Correct me if I am wrong. Try to relax a person you are working with. Take your time.

I have heard of hypnotherapists using instant inductions on new clients. Why waste five or ten minutes of the session on an induction when you don't have to?

I think instant inductions are a useful skill to learn. You won't be a master hypnotist just because you can do them, because there's a lot more to hypnotism than the induction, but they help.

That is the problem because I have also heard that hypnotists only use instant inductions on subjects they already worked with. They do it because subjects are used to go into a trance state with their help. After a few sessions, a person comes to a hypnotist and he will be like "Think of a rainbow", and boom - subject is in a deep trance. It will be so great if someone with actual experience will give us an idea on that.

For people I've already worked with, I don't even use inductions. The first time I hypnotize them, if I expect to hypnotize them again, I set up a trigger to drop them for next time.

saladinsmith you are everywhere! Thanks a lot!
So you are a hypnotist yourself, right? What about these instant inductions? Do you think they work?
Getting your reply would be so valuable I believe.

I am a hypnotist, but not a professional. I myself have not used instant inductions because so few of my sessions have have been in person (I estimate that I hypnotized about 100 people in the last year, but only one in person), but I know lots of people who use them, both in hypnotherapy and in stage and street hypnosis. I definitely think they work, if you can physically be with the person you're hypnotizing -- I usually can't.

you need to keep trying and try out different techniques man. There is more than one technique for hypnotism to work!

Learn to walk before you learn to run. Also maybe you're trying too hard?

There's no such thing as failure. Maybe they are just the wrong subjects at the time. You could try advertising for people to practise on and assess them before you try the induction
