a question for you long term marijuana smokers

Postby Modus Ponens » Fri Aug 25, 2006 10:21 am

hi guys, i am not addicted to marijuana anymore but im posting this here rather than at a marijuana related website because when i post there i seem to get nothing but negativity about the fact that i am saying something bad about marijuana.

anyway, i smoked marijuana daily for about 18 months. i started off smoking several times a day and then went down to just 2 or 3 times per day. i would say my consumption averaged at about an ounce per month. eventually i developed panic attacks , a racing heart and other negative affects and when i couldnt put up with them anymore, i quit. however, now, a year later, i am still suffering from the affects of my usage. i feel like the drug negatively affected many systems of my body, namely my lungs, my heart, my brain and my stomach. basically, i still feel a little stoned. i still feel like my body is functioning in a way that resembles more the way it used to function while i was under the influence of marijuana. for example, beginning with my stomach, it is known that marijuana increases the amount of time it takes your stomach to empty. towards the end of my smoking period, it would take me forever to digest my meals and i would feel completely bloated and completely without energy after eating. even though i havent smoked in quite a while now, my stomach still feels like this and in addition i am experiencing pain and discomfort during digestion. my stomach is also far more sensitive than it used to be. for example if i eat too much spicy food, i will feel a burning sensation in my stomach all night long. alcohol is out of the question as welll. drinking one beer can give me a stomach ache for DAYS. i had none of these problems before i smoked weed. it may be worth nothing that when i was addicted to weeed, i could only eat when i had the munchies. since this post is already quite long, i guess ill deal with the problems with the others parts of my body in other threads if and just make this one about my stomach.

anyway, id like to know if any other of you long term marijuana smokers have experienced anything like this, either now or after you quit. for those of you who have quit for a while, did marijuana have any permamnent affects on you? is there anything i can do to make this better or am i stuck like this? i am seeing a doctor but they haven't figured out whats wrong yet. please include your history of marijuana (how much you smoked) use and your symptoms and anything that alleviates them if you respond. ive noticed people in here saying they smoked for 17 years. i could never have smoked that long because the negative affects simply became too great long before that and my lungs were shot in under 2 years.

It sounds like you may have an inflammatory bowl disease. you should see a doctor about the stomach/abdominal problems. Even if the pot did bring on a flare up of a bowel disease you still need to treat it.

Hi There

I too suffer from very bad indigestion that may be attributed to smoking weed...our circumstances are so similar. After a week-end of heavy using I can get acute stomach pains that debilatate me completely for up to 8 hours. It is living totrure and I have to lay down and wait for it to pass.

I have been to Doctors, I have had blood tests, I have had ultra scans...the works. No Doctor has found anything wrong with me and the tests appear to show a healthy combination of all the compenents of iron, vitamins and red/ white cells.

Stopping smoking does help but I wrestle the urges the moment I have ran out.

A few thinsg help with the pains...peppermint tea/ oil. If the pain is acute, try a hot water bottle just to ease things. A little help perhaps.

Thanks for sharing this

I too have had some severe digestive problems. It took 18 months to get a possible diagnosis. People with Crohns/colitis often go years before they get a diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Ischemic Colitis (a stroke in your colon), Crohns disease which can be anywhere from your mouth to your anus, and Ulcerative Colitis, which is typically in the colon only. Other possible problems, celiac sprue disease, where your immune system reacts to wheat barley rye, etc. Not always easy to diagnose, would need to look at your small intestine (biopsy) Also are you lactose intolerant? I had severe problems then hit on that and once I stopped drinking milk, eating ice cream, etc, the symptoms subsided. If you are still having problems I would keep going to the doctor, and ask to see a specialist. It took years to get an appointment at Mayo clinic but once you do thye WILL find out whats wrong with you.
Also smoking pot tends to send me into a feeding frenzy, eating things that contribute to gut problems. Good Luck to you

Modus Ponens,

It sounds to me as though you have excess stomach acid, alcohol (especially wine) is a big culptrit of causing this. I don't think you will have inflammatory bowel disease. I had the exact same problem as you and this is caused generally by eating your food too fast. To solve this, I went to my General Practitioner and explained the exceedingly painful stomach upset and indigestion and I was prescribled a drug called Omeprazole, this worked very well and works by neutralising the stomach acid. It completely cured it for me and I only took it for a month and do not get these symptoms at all anymore.

Good luck.

Hi,
I have similar symptoms to those listed above. The day after I smoke pot my stomach becomes really bloated and I get pain in my lower back and on the left hand side of my stomach. also recurrent bouts of diaharroa (i know yuck). this never happened to me when i first began smoking pot but i have been smoking almost daily for the last 18 months of so. i had been advised by many different doctors that it was irritable bowell syndrome so i gave up coffee, tea, wheat and lactose products- all to no affect. Only after going away forced me to give up smoking did i admit that the problem was the dope. I'm not smoking so regularly now but even a joint or two can still set me off. I would love to have the occassional smoke but don't know how these symptoms can be avoided. Has anyone got any advice other than the predictable 'don't smoke' which i'm well aware of?

thanks for your responses. to give an update, earlier this week my stomach was feeling bad but in the past couple of days, its been feeling much better. however, the thing that still gets to me is how long it takes me to digest. for example, today i had lunch at 11:30 am and i was done eating before noon. at around 8 o'clock at night, i decided i want to try running (im trying to get in shape to combat the lethargy). however, i still felt like i hadn't completely digested my lunch and i remember thinking to myself, "hmmm, i probably shouldn't go for a run this soon after eating". then i thought, "wait a minute, its been 8 whole hours since i ate anything". i dont understand why my stomach takes so long to empty and it does this even when i have no other symptoms, for instance there no pain or discomfort today. as a result of this, ive taken to only having meal a day because if i have more than one, then it seems like i spend the entire day digesting my food and cannot do anything athletic!

if you onkly smoked once or twice a month, you couldnt have had withdrawal no matter how much you smoked. you probably had a hangover and are mistaking it for withdrawal. you shouldnt have permament affects from only smoking that infreqently either.

yes i expeieneces these syptoms mostly. My stomache used to be as strong as steel and could take anything... now i have chronic nausea since ive quit... It feels like it takes days to digest anything... i have to wait a long time before i can exercise because i feel so bloated... i hardly eat anything now because obviously my appetite has gone... when i lapsed the other day, my appetite came flooding back and i had to orderr a curry and stuffed my face... big mistake... next day i feel awful... regret and stomache problems... i dont drink alccohol anymore either because it affects my stomache... i beleive my whole digestive system is working more sluggishly because of the absense of thc and i didnt know there was evidence to suggest this.. this is a bit hippyish but i beleive it is an effect of the chakra imbalance of the solar plexus (yellow) and the spleen chakra (orange)...

Chakra Three:
Fire, Ego identity, oriented to self-definition
This chakra is known as the power chakra, located in the solar plexus. It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.

Chakra Two:
Water, Emotional identity, oriented to self-gratification
The second chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to the element water, and to emotions and sexuality. It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfillment, and the ability to accept change.
if anyone wants to hear more about these chakras or any others then just say... also ways to balance chakras too.

i find camomile tea helps no end!! i have heard peppermint tea helps too..
ever i met my ex and went thru hell i have developed a stomache problem... before i used to see him i was oftem psysically sick... i think it was something instinctive that was trying to point out that i should not of been seeing him. He had a stomache problem and i somtimes feel this was passed onto me... its strange that beforee i met him, i never has stomache problems...
