What Is A Good Illustration/Quote For Speech on Resentment?

Postby Chuck_Inglish » Sun Jan 22, 2012 5:29 pm

Soon, I'm giving a 25 minute speech on harboring resentment and why be forgiving. In my efforts to create a rousing introduction, I've been trying to think of a good illustration to help the listeners visualize the point in their minds. Any ideas or opinions? Any other ideas on elements somewhere within the speech? It would be greatly appreciated.

Not a particularly clever one, but very effective:

Friend and I went to hear a speaker who told us two brothers had not spoken for years, and their respective families were estranged, because one of them had once called the other a pumpkinhead.

The packed room broke up laughing. That talk was more than 20 years ago, and my friend and I have used "pumpkinhead" as a term of endearment for each other ever since.

Haha, that seems like it would actually be a nice touch if I had a bit more time. I'm not sure how I would include that in my speech but it surely would get a good response from the audience. Thanks.

Here's a couple of nice quotes I've collected over the years on resentment and forgiveness. I have a moleskine notebook in which I write down my favorite quotes and sayings:

Not forgiving someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.
- Unknown

Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.
- Mark Twain

For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
