Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Postby [email protected] » Sat Feb 14, 2004 10:17 pm

In regards to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in which the main preoccupation is with checking such items as door locks or if the dog is in the house, etc., I can see how cognitive behavioral therapy can help when one learns to sit through the anxiety allowing the anxiety to diminish and hopefully to diminish the OCD symptoms also, but how does cognitive behavioral therapy attempt to correct distrust of one's own memory and when the checking is related to almost anything and not just one particular thing such as checking door locks. Also, how would cognitive behavioral therapy help to discontinue ruminations and obsessions that don't have compulsions? Thank you for your response.

Hi Vegas :)

CBT should certainly be used with relaxation training as OCD is an anxiety driven condition. The distrust of one's own memory always occurs in conjuntion with anxious arousal.

Someone who obsesses doesn't just need to learn to think differently but to feeldifferently.

Relaxed imaginative rehearsal of notover checking trains the instincts to respond more appropriately.

Once a person has learned to relax deeply to the thought of not over-checking then they generally make speedy progress.

This principle also applies to obsessive ruminations which are emotion-driven. Teaching people to ruminate withoutthe emotion takes the compusivity from the thought.

So, when working with someone who obsesses about imaginary illness (hyperchondria) we may get them to still imagine being ill but whilst feeling relaxed and disassociated. Again once they have done the imaginings becomes less compulisive.

I think some cascading cross-references to other threads might help widen the horizon further:
