I have a strange type of eating disorder?

Postby beccalauren3 » Thu May 26, 2011 6:29 pm

The first part of the disorder is pretty basic. It's just me counting calories and doing a bit of exercise each night, binging and fasting every now and then.

However, I've recently had a much more pressing problem which seems to be totally unique, according to my lack of results on google... I have this thing where I literally can't stand the sounds of food being eaten. I don't mean I just dislike it- I mean that I absolutely hate it and dread it with a passion to the point where I've been breaking down in tears and gagging after every meal. My mum's making me eat at the table with everyone else because she wants me to 'stop being stupid'- but she doesn't get it. It's getting to the point where I'm scared to eat food- not because of the body image issues that started this, but because I'm terrified I'll be making noises. I don't know what's wrong with me. Has anyone else experienced this?

Ugh. That sounds miserable.

It screams obsessive compulsiive disorder. But also reminds me of latent or mild autism. I'd suggedt doing a little googling on both and see if you identify with the symptoms. The are other more serious conditions, but for those I would leave to a professional to mention. That said, make an appointment to be screened for ocd or a mental illness. No one here can satisfy your need to know for sure.

Some ideas: play music or have the tv on during meals. Something else to break up the focus and noise. This coondition is also right up the alley for cognitive behavior therapy, flooding and reconditioning. It sounds like phobic behavior, which is very treatable! Wear headphones with soothing music when you eat. You could learn meditation and self hypnosis, for a few other options. I'm of the DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) team and would use something called "radical acceptance" with distress tolerance sills. Whatever you choose, it will take time and dilligence on your part. AND it can be done!

I hope you'll keep us posted.
It seems consuming and earth shattering, but it can be helped.

Hi beccalauren3,
I had similar problem when I was a child and my mom asked me about the meal before cooking something.
Do tell your mother what you want to eat it might help you also. Better consult with some nutritionist or psychiatrist.

One of the many things I absolutely enjoy doing, is eating food may way.
I've been on the receiving end of advice far too many times for not complying with the rules of the table.
The way I tackle with these, is by turning a deaf ear.
I believe that nobody can teach me how to eat and have sex. These are primordial instincts in man and I thing we just need to listen to our body more than anyone else. :)
