We need to realize that taking drugs for anxiety attacks may be missing the target(s) that are responsible for anxiety attacks. Drugs generally treat symptoms not causes.
Anxiety attacks, as I see it, are caused by excess secretion of adrenaline - the stress hormones that prepares us for fight/flight, with the difference that there is no real danger in our environment.
This may lead us to believe that 'irrational' or 'inappropriate' thoughts are the trigger for these anxiety attacks. If this were so, then it would be easy to stop these attacks by stopping to have these thoughts. Sadly, it does not work that way.
Adrenaline functions to raise blood sugar levels, divert energy from the digestive system, to more important organs such as the heart, muscles, and the brain, all needed in case of danger! These are the symptoms of anxiety attacks.
The question is why would the body suddenly increase adrenaline levels??
Answer: when we have insulin resistance - a sugar handling problem - the brain receives ‘inappropriate’ concentrations of glucose, its only source of energy. When there is a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, the brain sends a message to the adrenal glands to pour adrenaline into the system. This converts sugar stores in the body into glucose and the brain receives ‘appropriate’ amount of glucose again.
