The POWER of DECLARATIONS. what are yours?

Postby Robert Mundane » Wed Jun 27, 2018 3:53 pm

It was 5/8/2018. Just over a month and a half ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. After one of the WORST weekends on a trip away with my girlfriend and another couple at the beach, I woke up at 3:30am feeling like I was going to die. I woke up gasping for air like there wasn't any oxygen in the room left for me to breathe, my heart was pounding, palpitating, and I couldn't catch my breathe. I got up to get a drink of water and go to the bathroom thinking it would pass, but it only got worse, then finally, in my bathroom, I collapsed, passed out, hit my head on the bathtub and once again was gasping for air. I got back up and grabbed all my homeopathic medication I have been on since being diagnosed with lyme disease, went downstairs and woke up my parents and told then I needed to go to the hospital. All that would come out of my mouth was "I dont want to die, I dont want to die". I could barley walk, I was so unresponsive, It took me probably 10 seconds to answer one question in the ER. I was terrified, I didn't know what was happening....

The ER experience was terrible, I didn't get a single answer of what was happening, but after realizing what was happening, I got my answers. the fear of doing anything was crippling. I could breathe, I was hyperventilating for days straight. I could breathe, sleep, eat. I just wanted this to end...

One night I couldn't sleep, It was just another night of insomnia and wondering if i was going to die, but then I decided to take control. I told myself "Im not dying tonight", "I will live to see tomorrow"

I realized that I stoping dreaming, the fear was so prevalent that I stopped looking for the good things that tomorrow could bring and was only focused on if I was going to die or not right NOW.

So I made a list of declarations, pointing me to a better tomorrow, and I would declare them over me until I felt well enough to go to sleep... here are my declarations.

WHEN I BEAT THIS, IM GOING TO FEEL ON TOP OF THE WORLD, LIKE I CAN DO ANYTHING

WHEN I BEAT THIS, HELL WILL KNOW MY NAME AS "THE ONE" WHO MADE IT THROUGH

WHEN I BEAT THIS, IM GOING TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY WITH MY STORY, AND TONIGHT IS APART OF THAT STORY, IM NOT DYING TONIGHT.

WHEN I BEAT THIS, IM GOING TO OWN THIS FEAR, AND I WILL HELP OTHERS THROUGH THIS. THIS IS NOT THE END

WHEN I BEAT THIS, I WILL BE A THREAT TO FEAR, AND I WILL RECKLESSLY LOVE MYSELF AND OTHERS

WHEN I BEAT THIS, I WILL LIVE MY LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND BE THANKFUL FOR EVERY DAY

.......

I AM, KIND

I AM, A GOOD PERSON

I AM, A RELENTLESS LOVER, EVEN WHEN I GET HURT FROM HOW MUCH I LOVE PEOPLE, ITS NOT A CURSE, ITS A GIFT, AND I WILL CONTINUE TO LOVE

I AM, A FIGHTER, AND I WILL BEAT THIS

I AM, A WORLD CHANGER, AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF MY STORY

I AM, A LIGHT IN THE DARK FOR OTHERS GOING THROUGH THIS

I AM, BRAVE

I AM, COURAGEOUS

I AM, NOT HELPLESS. I CHOOSE LIFE!!!!

After declaring these things over me EVERY NIGHT, I was able to get to sleep faster. I took a week or two, but Through this i realized the POWER of declarations. I've heard it said "Life and death is in the power of the tongue" and I didn't believe that until this happened and it was literally life and death for me.

So what are your declarations that you make over yourself to help you see the light at the end of the tunnel?

Personally, I find that declaration without action has no power.

To me, action has power. A declaration of courage or bravery doesn't make me so. It is only through actions that others might choose to label my behaviors as brave or courageous. We change the world through our actions, e.g. this thread is an action. To me, life and death is in the power of our actions. It is in our actions where we find our strength.

The reason I am not a fan of declarations is because declarations are incredibly easy to make. We can declare anything we like. It takes absolutely no effort to make a declaration. We literally can declare whatever we wish in a matter of seconds, therefore I find declarations to be a false sense of power.

Understandably there is a role declarations should play in the initiation of action. But, this is not always the case. This is because many times declarations are not tied to action. A declaration of being good or brave is meaningless in my opinion, because it is too vague. It is not tied to any specific action.

I can agree with that. and you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! Who we are is determined by what we do with the situations that we have presented to us. No matter how good or bad. But, our actions start with out beliefs. If I believe that I am worthless, and my life has no meaning, I'll probably be a couch potato for the rest of my life, but If I believe the opposite, then I will work to create meaning, and I will value my own voice.

If the belief that I am worthless and not a good or kind person is present when I am in the middle of having an anxiety attack and I think Im going to die, then Im not going to care whether I live or die, and the anxiety and depression will only increase before I may or may not become suicidal. If I believe the opposite, then the anxiety will most likely cease.

My point is, you are right. Action in the end is what matters. But your action starts with what you believe, and If you don't believe it, declarations can help kick start your brain into the journey of coming into the beliefs that you are worth it.

And of course you could argue that whether you believe it or not, it still only matters what you do in that situation, but at 3AM with no where to go and the ER cant help you, you can either choose to lay there and let the anxiety and depression take over you, or you can speak against it and start to think of a better tomorrow.

I agree. There is a symbiotic interaction between beliefs and action. My point is where the power exists. Personally, I find very little power in declarations. A declaration requires nothing. I can declare I am good on Monday and bad on Tuesday. Instead, I find that power exists firmly in our actions. Declarations prove nothing, actions do.

When a person is in bed at 0330 am and begins to panic, what actions can they take? What actions prove they are worth it? Focusing in on the concrete actions a person of worth might take, including reaching out for help, regardless of hour of the day is proof of worth. To lay in bed making declarations is an unworthy action, in my opinion.

In some sense, I think that prior to an episode, prior to panic or anxiety, individuals believe they are not worthy of imposing on others and therefore do not have a plan of action other than to lay there and suffer. They are afraid to act which makes the situation worse. I believe there is the stigma or embarrassment associated with the action of asking for help. These are beliefs I hold...an opinion.

Declaration tied to action looks like: "I am worthy, therefore I will never lay in bed..." In this manner, there is an if/then condition where the power lies in the action proving the declaration.

Anyway, I understand that it is fair to argue the power lies in the declaration. Fair enough, but as stated it is difficult for me to find power in anything that requires no effort.

I see what you're saying. also totally respect your opinion. I know for a fact that I thought the same way you did. It was THIS experience that change that thought in me that is was ONLY in my actions that I had power. In my opinion, and through my experience I now believe there is power in both, BUT you are right, to say or and declare it is nothing. and holds no power, but I think there are ways to get to believing that you do have the power to DO something, and through this experience I realized that a mode to kick me INTO action, was declarations. Therefore I believe that there is power there.
