Traumatic incident reduction

Postby kfedouloff » Thu Oct 23, 2003 10:39 am

I saw a notice for a training course in the UK-hypnotherapy group and followed this link to the Traumatic Incident Reduction website.

This approach looks like an approximation to the rewind technique, but does not seem to go the whole way. It seems to actively encourage the emotional re-experiencing, whereas the rewind technique focuses on detachment from the emotions.

Has anyone used this approach? Other views about it?

Critical incident debriefing gets people to re-experience the emotion. Not only does common sense tell us that it's a bad idea, research showing the ineffectiveness of CID does too.

From that page:
"Typically, the viewer will reach an emotional peak after a few run-throughs and then, on successive run-throughs, the amount of negative emotion will diminish, until the viewer reaches a point of having no negative emotion about the incident."

Why get the person to suffer more? They obviously haven't got the whole pictures about de-traumatisation, and are either wedded to the idea that you have to get emotional for trauma to be cured, or are unaware that it can be done otherwise.

Getting someone to re-experience the emotion of a traumatic incident is a bad idea all round. Categorically.

That's rather what I think too, Roger. I think I may put a posting through to UK-hypnotherapy (and stand by for the flak!)

Hi,

Would someone explain what the "Rewind Technique" is?

Hi there,

This is an interesting topic.

Taking an NLP stance I would try to change the thinking cognitively. Recently, however, I became interested in Emotional Freedom Technique. (EFT). This calls for "tuning in" to the emotions and then tapping the meridians to release the emotion. I have found it to be very successful.

Has anyone else got any thoughts about EFT.

Hi Ian, a big welcome to the forum.
How do you go about "tuning in" to emotions through EFT? And what do you mean by "meridians"?

Thank you for the welcome.

Yes I suppose the meridians can be likened to the chakras.

You tune in by getting the client to think about the event (from the third position if really painful) and then you tap the end of the meridians to free the energy.

I am amazed at the effiacy of EFT and would recommend anyone looking into it.

If you would like a link to the site PM me as I dont like to post links within forums as it appears bad form.

You could have a look at my website in the signature and follow the link I suppose.

If I can be of any further help just let me know.

Isn't then EFT like tuina with a psychological twist in the sense of getting the client to think about the event right before applying tuina?
