Jaw problem as withdrawal symptom?

Postby WindowsXP420 » Sun Apr 18, 2021 12:10 pm

Hello,

I have found this website a couple of weeks ago when I had derealization issues from weed withdrawal. The stories here really helped me to calm my nerves, and since then many of my symptoms have actually improved a lot.

I have used weed heavily from 2016 to 2020. At the beginning of this year, I have decided to stop using and have a fresh start in my life, so my last spliff was smoked 3.5 months ago. I have used weed in an on and off fashion, meaning I was usually high for 1-2 months, followed by one clear month. I have only smoked joints exclusively, and I was a heavy smoker as well. During my use I actually perceived my use to be highly problematic, however, I was not able to quit for good. Long story short, I went to psychotherapy in 2019 which lasted for about 2 years and with its help, I was able to end this habit.

While some side effects mildly persist (most notably fear of death, but I think this is related to a previous psychedelic use) my issue is that I have a pain in my jaw ever since I quit. It did not happen instantaneously, like for the first two weeks my jaw was alright. After the second week or so, I noticed that my hearing is not as good as before, and I have also had pain around my ears. I visited some doctors, I thought this might be attributed to wisdom teeth pain, but after they removed one of them the pain still there. Initially, there were headaches as well but after a month or so I only have a mild but consistent pain around my ears. After waking up everything is fine, I don't feel the pain (so I guess it's not night bruxism), but after like half an hour I start to feel it. I thought it could be somehow also related to the mask-wearing because of COVID but I am not convinced. Coffe and stress do not help as well.

My question is if there is anyone on this forum who had similar jaw problems after quitting M? I saw some similar topics around here but it would be nice to have someone's feedback who has experienced such withdrawal symptoms.

Thank you in advance, my internet friends, stay strong!

Hey man,

I feel for you. Those things can really mess you up. I can't really talk about weed withdrawal as I didn't use weed, but I have abused benzodiazepines. Which gave me teeth grinding for months.

As for your hearing, did you listen to loud music while high? I used to wear headphones all the time with the volume on max. When I quit drugs I couldn't hear as much and it felt like my ears were full.

I think it might be helpful to check with your doctor and ear doctor to make sure everything is in check.

Hope it helps

Hey! Congrats on 3.5 months.

I started experiencing jaw pain about 2 weeks ago. I have been told by my dentist that I grind my teeth, but I don’t recall doing it during the day and I’ve never woken up with a headache/ jaw pain or anything. But about 2 weeks ago my jaw was soooo achy. After a couple of days of monitoring myself I realized I was clenching down a lot throughout the day without even realizing it. Even if it wasn’t super tight. I have read on the forums of people clenching/grinding as a withdrawal symptom. As well as pressure around their eyes/nose.

Hope you find some relief soon!

Is it jaw pain, like in your muscles?

I have dealt with swolen lymph nodes in my jaw that are painful when they are bad; and I also felt headache and pain around temples and ears.

Hi,
I find your post very interesting. I have been a heavy marijuana smoker from 2006 to present. I have not decided to quit smoking yet even though I, too, perceive my use to be highly problematic, but I am never fully able to quit for good. I was never able to stay sober longer than 3 months.

As I said I still smoke the same amount but in 2020, I started having the same jaw pain. I do grind my teeth and I have since I was a child but I assumed the added “pressures of life” caused me to grind more. I got a night guard which helped but I’ve noticed that i clinched during the day consistently for no reason. As I paid closer attention to it, it happens more intensely directly after smoking. The only change I can attribute to this is that I began purchasing medical marijuana exclusively instead of from my local guy. Different strains make it more or less severe and fades over time.

Thanks for sharing, hope this helps!
