age care

Postby sprinkels222 » Wed Jan 07, 2015 8:06 pm

I have the qulifications of age care cert 3 which allows me to work in a nursing home as a carer its all i ever wanted to be i understand the job can be stressful, emotional and full on but at the end of the day its all rewarding but no one is willing to hire me because i have a heart condition which is been treated with the correct medications so i decided to volunteer as a lifestyles assisnt and was doing great for 9 months and a job opened up so i applied and got knocked back when i asked why they informed me from thier observations i wouldnt be able to cope with the work load this really stung because i was in there 4 days a week from 9am-4.30pm organising activities brain storming with them all and interacting with the residents one on one and at least twice a week conducting my own activites with the residents and they were fine with that. I feel like there taking advantage of the fact im willing to do the workload without getting paid and ill stay regardless because of the joy i get out of it.
But what do i do if i can never get an actual job in the area i love and only thing i ever have a passion for if no ones willing to give me a chance to prove i can do it and trust ill step back if my heart is affecting my abilites to preform the duties required to the highest standards

Can you get a cert from your doctor that you are fit to do that kind of work?

I assume they are afraid to take on the liability of you dying while on their premises but you might ask around about this from companies who insure workplaces against liabilities. If there is no way to overcome the potential employer's fears then distill what you like from your area and settle on a related field that meets most of the desires of your first choice.

Given it is a form of nursing working with elderly, would the position require you be capable of performing CPR? This single task along with any other physical requirements may be of concern to some employers, especially in smaller facilities or organizations where care would be one on one or staffing limited. As a part time laborer they can always ensure at least one full-time is on the schedule that can provide all functions of the position. I'm not asking to be negative or to defend the employer, I'm just going through plausible reasons why you might be finding it challenging.

My recommendation would be to go after positions at larger organizations, don't specifically target Certificate III age care (take anything to get your full-time foot in the door). You can get promoted later. And don't give up. Put out more resumes. Now, if you live in a smaller community then something has to give, but certainly you can still find something in the area you love, maybe just not starting as a Cert III right away.
