Self confidence is low

Postby Peanut » Sun Oct 19, 2003 12:01 pm

Hello. I just recenly found this site, and am so glad I did. I am really learning a lot from reading the various articles and posts.

My self confidence took a real hit about two years ago, and because I have been working through other issues, I am just now at a place where I am trying to repair the damage, and get my confidence in myself and my abilities back, so that I can return to work.

I am an attorney, so self-confidence is very important to have for a whole host of reasons.

I am very much looking forward to interacting with you all on this site more in the future.

Best regards, Peanut

Hi Peanut

A warm welcome to the forums to you! One thing I often recommend to clients who want to build their self confidence is to focus on areas other than where they are having the problem, so for example, someone having confidence problems at work could focus on building their confidence about their fitness, their knowledge of a particular hobby, their confidence about how to drive well, listen well, or anything really!

Once this gets moving, it is easier to 'move it across' into the problem area.

Another essential element of self confidence is making sure that you are not thinking in 'black and white' terms. There is more on this at http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk

I don't if you've tried it, but our self confidence course may also be helpful.

Glad to have you hear and I look forward to getting your input on more discussions in the future.

All the best

Roger

Dear Roger: Thank you so much for your kind reply.

I agree with your suggestion about trying to gain self-confidence in one area of your life that is 'doable', and then 'moving it across' to other areas.

I have spent the last year with agoraphobia, but am now, (just since 9/1/03), getting to the gym every day, which has helped me gain some confidence about trying to regain some ground in other areas of my life, (the biggest being a return to my career).

I'm also finding myself in a midlife crisis of sorts, because I'm just not sure now what I want to do 'when I grow up' (I'm 42) - lol.

I have, btw, signed up for the e-mail self-confidence course that you offer.

Thank you again for your reply, and for creating this great site. I am looking forward to visiting it often.

Sincerely, Peanut
