Quit Smoking: How i did it

Self Hypnosis: I quit smoking

I want to share some of the principles/techniques that i used in self hyp in order to quit smoking.

1.) I realized that before I convinced myself to quit smoking, I must 'change my mind' about smoking or 'convince myself to WANT to quit'.

2. In convincing myself to WANT or DESIRE to quit I would simply talk to myself out loud. Anytime a thought would pop up that said to me that it was "impossible" I would pace that then reframe it to mean that "Because I think this then I am even more compelled to put smoking away, etc." blah, blah.

3. Step 2 did not work right away so i helped it along with writting. I would write an induction to myself straight thru, with out stopping, reading it or correcting errors. Then I would read it back to myself with a millitary or hip hop cadence. I would focus on the cadence and not the words. Sometimes misspellings or broken context would occur but I didnt stop while i read this back to myself, I just went straight thru even if i stummbled over words. Most of the time I would just delete the induction unless I thought it was really good! They important thing is that i did whenever i needed it.

4. Leading up to the actual time to quit, I began to experiment with goal setting. I did this because I had heard that your subcon. must begin to realize that if you intend to 'do something' then you will accomplish it. So I needed to convince myself that "I mean what I say". I started by using a productivity app on my phone. I woul d plug in minor things that I wanted to do (easy things) and set a specific time that they needed to be done. They would be things like "fix the XBOX, build a garden box, buy a toothbrush, etc.". This began to work because anytime a reminder would pop up I would feel this overwhelming drive to accomplish this goal. An addiction to setting and accomplishing goals!!!

4. Finally I made my "Put away smoking Goal": 1. Buy an e-cig this date....., by this date use lower nicotine levels.....by this date use an even lower level....by this date only use e-cig at these times....Put e-cig away on this date.....

5. I began to tell myself that the e-cig is the thing that I needed to quit. then i would TRY to quit the e-cig and when that didnt work and i needed it really bad I went ahead and smoked it. It gave me total pleasure. I had completely forgot (well kinda forgot) about cigarettes and became distracted with the e-cig.

6. As I suggested to myself, I would use breath fresh air more and more and suggested that I only NEEDED to carry things like my wallett (as opposed to the e-cig) I began to forget the e-cig and 'naturally' left it put it out of mind.

Also, I want to add that any goal I would accomplish I would tell myself something like " Since I accomplished this goal and I like setting goals because I keep setting them I am starting to see that I am compelled or automatically driven to accomplish these goals and naturally that means that even putting away cigarettes will be even easier than that because Is happens automatically and while that happens easily i could realize...."
The way I handled the urges was to find soemthing positive about them like "anxiousness". I would turn that into "energy" by interpreting it that way via auto sugg. "because you feel this energy you could...". Once I got good at that I would try and force the withdrawl symptom to get stronger. Sometimes i would taunt it too but that works for me.

Hope this gives someone an idea on how to make some changes.

I havent smoked for about 90 days I think. Havent been keeping track because that part of my life is past.

P.S. Although this process took less than a month, I had been practicing self hyp for atleast 6 months up an to that point. I had already understood the way I process beliefs by then so it made it a bit more easy.

Before I quit smoking I had eliminated anxiety (this was a mistake actually), controlled my temper, auto suggested lucid dreaming and other simple things.

So this will require some practice!

Well, Quitting smoking can be a real challenge. But it's one of the best things you can do for your health. Smoking is a dangerous, even deadly habit. It's a leading cause of cancer. It also increases your risk for heart attacks, strokes, lung disease, and other health problems, including bone fractures and cataracts.

That is very exciting! Congratulations. I have been wondering how to implement some self-hypnosis in quitting smoking. Recently I realized that I've been going through some positive change milestones and that I could use this positive change pattern as leverage in quitting smoking later this year.

I'm wondering if you could elaborate on how relieving anxiety was a mistake?

I hope you've been feeling great since kicking the habit.

If you want to quit smoking fast then you need to set a goal for quit smoking. This goal depends on you, how much time or month to decide to quit smoking. There are many Goal setting and tracking Apps available online which help to achieve life goals....All the best!
