Help with Depersonalisation Disorder (DPD)

Postby WestCoastPeter » Mon Jan 06, 2014 4:36 pm

I have a clt diagnosed with DPD. Male, 25 yrs old. Intelligent with academic job. Presents as confident and friendly and until this problem arose he had a healthy social life. It began with a spontaneous severe panic attack 6yrs ago. Since then clt has had a continuous feeling of living in a dream and being in somebody else's body.

He still has occasional panic attacks but it is the dissociation that really gets him down. He has mild anxiety and depression symptoms but these may be the effects of the DPD. He no longer has the confidence to drive, or go anywhere alone.

Clt has been prescribed a bucketful of drugs inc SSRIs, tranqs etc. but none of them have had any effect either positive or negative. He has had two MRIs, hearing tests and other investigations which have all been negative.

He has tried mindful meditation classes which have not helped.

Currently he is waiting to hear whether the Depression and Anxiety Service will authorise a short course of CBT.

Now he is turning to hypnotherapy in desperation. I've not encountered this before so would appreciate any advice. One possibility is regression to cause since some people believe that DPD can be the result of childhood trauma. Another avenue may be Parts Therapy.

The WebMD site does suggest clinical hypnotherapy as a treatment for DPD but I have not found anything that indicates what would be best technique to explore. I am open to suggestions and clearly do not want to do anything that could make the situation worse.
