Forum upgrade wish list

Postby Roger Elliott » Fri May 22, 2009 11:54 am

UncommonForum has been up and running for a good few years now and looks pretty much the same as the day it launched. It's not that it's ugly (is it? :) ) but everyone benefits from a makeover now and then.

Over the coming month or so we're looking to give the place a bit of a face lift, and to add some new functionality.

So I'd like to ask you for one idea for a feature you'd like to see on the forum. If you've seen something over at another forum that you think would be good at UncommonForum, I'd love to know.

I can't promise we'll be able to act on all suggestions, but we will give each and every one careful consideration,

We're aiming to launch around the end of June, so please post any ideas here and we'll see what we can do.

Many thanks

Roger

Hay Roger,

What about having a reward feature?

This could be anything from rep points given for advice or given for encouragement to having a voting scheme for for members who give the best posts.

The biggest chunk that I think we are missing is Child/Family psychology section.

Well, a better means of site navigation is always something every site should work on. Perhaps a bar on the top with easy links to all the sections. Reputation systems have their ups and downs. On a site I am staff of, I have been trying to get then to re-do the reputation system, so people would stop complaining about it. If you do add a reputation system, no one should ever exceed one rep power.
By the way, I know there is a small attempt at a tool bar on the top, and the forum jump on the bottom, but, I do think it could use some work. The usefulness as is, is rather limited.

A quick reply box

Page numbers at the top of the thread you're in as well as the bottom

The title of the thread along the top where the links are once you're in 'reply mode' so it would say for eg: Psychology forum home -> Light Lounge -> The thread you're posting in

Ability to embed youtubes

Also, I'm not sure why this is (it is not my connection, it only happens on this forum) the Photography thread takes AGES to load. To open or to post in, it takes many minutes and I have no idea why. Any other thread that has more than 1 image posted in too. Any idea as to why this is?

Hi,
I agree with the idea that the design.layout needs a face lift but i would also take a serious look at the way the site operates.

I have noted in recent posts that the first impression, or ongoing one, could do with a makeover itself. there are some aspects that seem a little old hat in methods as well as content. This site competes with other sites of similar content and how repliers respond could make or break any hard work that is put in to keeping this site at the forefront of a very competitive market.

Keeping a sense of fun will make sure that people find the site approachable and is an aspect that should be encouraged but this needs to be monitored properly by people who can assess what is going on and therefore how to respond safely.

If you are going to take a serious look at finding ways to improve this site then you will need to start from the top and work your way down. Take your time though and be realistic in your chosen time frame.

Kind regards

I'd like to login and be able to click directly on posts that I have done. Like, a record of my posts of something. It gets hard to remember and it's a hassle to have to go through email when I'm already here anyway.

Ummm...

How about some different colors? This blue or grey or whatever it is just gets me depressed...hehehe.
Oh...how about a new and easier "search function"? I think Im just too stupid to get it to work...everytime I search for something and check the boxes I still get 2000 or more hits...doesnt matter what I do.

And how about a photo in the profiles? Or maybe even a small chatroom?

Dont forget the beer!

adding a chat module would be good

advocate_for_safety, does the 'View my posts' link top left on the homepage meet your requirements?

Roger, what version of phpBB will you be using? If it's version 3, then I am quite familiar with a few of it's functions up as I've helped develop & support this as well as my own forum uses this version too.

I've raised this with the techs but they're concerned about the amount of work needed to migrate our existing mods (plugins, not moderators ;) ) would cost us a bit. So at the moment, we're going to stick with 2.

To be fair, I think it's wise to stay with version 2 because version 3 (although very pretty and hosts an impressive array of new functions) is quite a complex system to navigate around and you'd be forever referring to the help manual - even as a developer! If you want to see what version 3 looks like fully running, I can send you a link via a PM, that is if you haven't already seen it.
