Weird habit, any guesses on its origin/meaning?

Hi everyone,

Bit of a weird question but I've always been curious about this. Since I was a little kid I've been compulsively pulling strings out of my clothes and rubbing them in my fingers (like the ones on hems or where the seam is on sleeves for example). Specifically the strings that are solid and don't come apart when rolled or rubbed between my fingers, as opposed to the ones that come apart into soft strands if twisted the wrong way.

I've been doing it since before I can remember, and I still do it fairly often, sometimes as a comfort thing and sometimes just because I enjoy the sensation of it. Is there any psychological explanation for this? I don't think it means I have something wrong with me, just have been curious as to what that is, where it comes from, and whether this is something other people do.

Any answers or input is welcome! Thanks all.

There, you've nailed it. Unless it's getting in the way of something or impacting on you it's just what it is. That's my opinion anyway. Not everything has to have a meaning.

I don't really know its meaning or its origin but I think we have the same habits. I am more into clicking joints, etc. and I keep a couple of things like solid rings. I used to have a a keychain Rubik cube, but then I got bored of that one.
