I want to start out in public speaking...

Postby Sleeping Giant » Mon Jul 11, 2011 8:57 pm

Hi,

I have been studying Self-Confidence since 2005 and have gained so much from it. Me and my partner spent almost one year in a homeless unit which as you could imagine was a big low for us. We seen people turn to drugs and drink when we were there one of them even died from taking too much drugs one night. We both were strong enough to stay away from both drink and drugs. I think it made me more determined to succeed.

I may not have the best job in the world but I want that to change, what I have learned is how to survive in what I believe is one of the worst situations someone could be put in. I believe that my story could motivate most people both old and young that no matter what their situation they can still succeed in life. I know that it does not matter how young, old, intelligent or how much money you have, you can still make something of your life.

I would like to be a public speaker, teaching people to have confidence with whatever they want to do in there life such as the statement 'what ever the mind can see and believe the mind can achieve'. My biggest problem is I do not know where to start to launch my career in Public Speaking. Can anyone help me :?:

One great way to start can be by thinking about something you are very good at and create a service or product that in some way satisfy any need in the market. Then create a short seminar to show people how you can help them and close the seminar with a great offer. You can start right there.
That's just one idea.. Another idea could be...
If you have a list of people interested in any area... you can create a webinar.
Speak about the subject of your choice and then invite them to a live seminar.

If I come up with something else, apart from the usual tips given on websites: volunteer yourself in events of your community.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that good advice I might try contacting some volunteer groups to see if they would like me to help with some of the problems that they face from day to day for obviously free. That way I can get my name known in my topic area. Thanks again.

Before I started my business as a professional speaker more that 15 years ago here is the advice that I received and followed.

1. Get good at the craft of speaking.

2. Speak to any group anywhere and anytime to get the practices and exposure.

3. Focus on a specific topic of expertise.

Thanks for that info George. You say you have been doing Public Speaking now for 15 years, if you don't mind me asking how did you get noticed and how did your advertise yourself?

If you want to get better, get some practice, and get some connections to help your career, then you really should join toastmasters international.

It really is a no brainer.

Strangely enough I was chatting to someone from Toastmasters a week or so ago and mentioned that I am confident when speaking in front of an audience provided that I am familiar with the subject. He contradicted me by stating that confidence was not the key issue and went on to discuss tactics with me. Sadly I switched off as I found myself getting too much information.

I was invited to a seminar and warned that I had a 40 second slot with which to introduce myself and talk about my business. Over the next few days I practiced timing and got it down to 38 seconds so far so good and then I stopped practicing probably because I was over confident?

It would therefore appear that preparation is just as important as confidence because I have to be honest here and admit that I fluffed my lines roughly half way through and ended up feeling rather sheepish.

Great stuff! I also agree with joining Toastmasters.

Also, how exactly have you been studying self-confidence?

What an inspiring thread. Self confidence is one of those things that we have to put into practice before we can really shine, so it makes a lot of sense to want to speak - and i agree, you've got a valuable story to tell.
I would agree with other responses. But one thing I would suggest, if you haven't done it already, is actually write the sort of speech you would like to make. You could also start a blog where you can post your story and lessons you have learnt and make yourself available to go to speak to groups in your community through this. Maybe even contact a local paper. You've got a great story to tell and other people would be pleased to hear it.
Best of luck!

It sounds like you are on your way. I think it is easy to get caught up in the mechanics and forget that what people really care about is your passion and experience with the subject. Sure you have to be engaging and make sense but these are skills and skills can be learned in a variety of places. Your experience and passion are all yours. Many cities have a Toastmasters club and this is an inexpensive way to meet others working to develop speaking skills.

Hi Ryan - The Sleeping Giant,

I hope things are going well with you. I was inspired to read about your plans. There are many options out there for you. I love speaking and in the beginning, I remember practicing again and again so you become so confident with your presentation that you nail it. When you do this, you get so excited that you want to do it again. You become more confident.

I am not a Toastmasters member, but I have heard that it's great. I have spoken at Jails, The Salvation Army, Schools and businesses. The point is that you could prepare an inspiring presentation for any number of people. Then practice, become confident and do very well. Keep moving in your great direction. Have a great day.

Like George I do public speaking for a living and train people in making presentations. As I've mentioned (many times!) elsewhere, Toastmasters is far from a no-brainer but it's often very useful indeed.

At the very least you'll make some contacts and get some pratice on the floor.

In terms of making a career out if it, there's not much more to say other than 'do it'... Speak over and over and over and take every opportunity to get yourself noticed.

You might also consider talking to some of the big names in the field who have stories similar to yours and see if they'd be prepared to mentor you. Without knowing where you are it's hard to make suggestions but the obvious one might be Richard McCann.
