Why do people purposefully try to piss you off?

Some people purposely try to piss you off and it makes no sense. It's like they don't like you or something but act very nice at other times. Any thoughts?

It could be;

-1- they do not realize they are trying to piss you off.
-2- they realize, because you did something they believe merits trying to piss you off.
-3- they realize, because it provides them a reward of some kind, e.g. establishes control, boosts their ego, relieves tension they may have, etc.
