Changing /shaky voice during a presentation

Postby Huhna » Thu Feb 06, 2014 9:50 am

I would like to know your opinion / advise on this problem.

When it comes to give a presentation in front a lot of people (it can also be a public speech), I become very nervous. What I observe is shaky/sweaty, brain freeze (I can not fully focus) and change of my voice/ shaky voice => caused maybe by forgetting to breathe regularly while under stress.

I have found out that I am nervous mainly because of the people. I am worried about what they would think if I do something wrong while presenting. I think also what makes me nervous is the change of voice. When it happens, it makes me nervous even more and it's escalating. (if I could get rid of this, I think, I would be fine.)

I think I have a good social life, however I think my biggest problem is that I care about what other people think of me.

Also I might have built some kind of phobia for the presenting in particular and I wonder how I can get rid of it.[/b]

When we are on alerted state of the mind we become more tense:

Because we are expecting something to happen, we are unsure about situation ; and the mind is too much focused to control everthing as when a snake wants to attack on self defense...

On public speaking for example;

Maybe you dont trust your idea, you think it is not good enough
Maybe you dont trust your spontaneity
Maybe you dont trust the others;

We need to remind ourselves there is no good reason to be afraid;

I have a good idea; i trust my idea that i am sharing here with you
I trust Myself; that i can come with ideas instictevly not everything comes on the books
Even if i fail who cares? This is not life or death situation

We need to make sure about expectations that we have; there should be tolerance about mistakes we just aim to take actions towards success;

I may be confident on this situation but there can be another situation that i have a negative memories; i try to change the memories there;

For example i was bitten from dogs; but than i got a dog and created new story with the dogs;

So you can change how you feel if you just do what you have to;

When someone is sad it overcomes fear; excitement nurture a fearful state of the mind to something such as anxiety; that voice shake

Hi Huhna,
Draw a body map - a picture to represent an outline of yourself. It does not have to be detailed or accurate, a stick-man or simple outline shape is fine, no artistic talent is required. Feel free to use whatever color you would like and choose different colors to draw with during the process. Do what feels right.

Once you have your body map, answer the following and represent your answers in whatever way feels right.

Do you have a sense of where your voice is located?

For example:
Head
Outside body
Throat
Eyes
Heart
Breath
Stomach

How many different voices do you have?

How old is each voice?

What voice is lost and not heard?

Where do your words come from?

Which words are your words?

Which belong to someone else?

What do your words do when you speak them?

What effect do your words have when they go out to someone else?

Please follow-up and share your experience.

I'd love to know what worked well and what didn't work well, for you? And what difference that experience made.

Feeling nervous is normal - what I always say to people is when you are nervous, it shows you care.

What I think is important is that you prepare mentally before the presentation. Allow yourself 10 minutes before the speech for yourself to clear your mind. Perhaps meditate, do breathing exercises and perhaps something slightly active.

By doing this you can clear your mind before. Just before you go on stage, rehearse your first 2 lines. This will prepare you to go on stage.

With regards to the questions you have, try and frame them more positively. Instead of asking, "what would they think if I do something wrong" instead think "how will they react if it goes amazingly" "what opportunities could I gain for this" "what are the amazing bits of wisdom that they can take with them tonight"

Always think to yourself, I may have helped the audience learn a lot and inspired them to take action. When you come from a place of audience first, its a very different feeling to putting yourself first.

Hope this helps
