Paralysis of choice

Postby WonderGurl » Sun Apr 10, 2016 8:52 pm

I am facing something I am unfamiliar with and I'd like some advice.

I am endeavouring a certain creative project where I need to build up a portfolio. My problem is that I have such overwhelming number of choices that every time I think about what type of piece I should work on next, I find myself a sort of overwhelming paralysis. The possibilities are literally limitless! What's the best way of narrowing them down?

Give them a priority rating according to defined "importance" criteria.

Your first goal is to create page 1. Give it a time reference for completion.

Hi, All in the mind, it's not that. If I had my choices narrowed down, it's easy to prioritise and set deadlines. It's the limitless choice of combinations of techniques that are overwhelming me when I do try to narrow them down. They all seem equally "important". Never mind, I'll just try focusing on one piece at a time, and hopefully the rest will settle and I'll be able to make up my mind better.

And just going with the moment can be the release of the paralysis (performance anxiety?). Having made a start you can then evaluate your approach.

No, it's not performance anxiety either, I have no fear of performance, I enjoy it quite a bit in fact. It's... being faced with innumerable amount of options I am unable to choose one, they all seem so good! For now, instead of trying to choose one of many, I decided to just do the first thing that comes into my head, and ignore the rest until that one project is completed. When that's done, as you say, I will reevaluate my approach.
