Books on Strengthening emotions?

Postby kyle2516 » Sat Jan 29, 2011 5:59 am

Hello,

I am new to emotional intelligence. I haven't read much about it, but I am interested in it. I have a question, though, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I am looking for a book or books that elaborate on how to strengthen emotions. When I say "strengthen emotions" I mean the ability to build a stronger connection to a certain emotion--make the emotion more potent.I have a theory I'm testing out, and I'm wondering if anyone has already written a book on the subject. Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks,

Kyle

Kyle, I do not feel anyone can strengthen their emotions by reading a book. I feel emotions can only be improved / strengthened by living life. A book may be able to explain why a person responds a certain way, or why certain events occur...but strengthening your emotional awarness actually comes from living.

My personal advice on how to do "this" is to make a declaration of who you are, then live it. If you have an experience you do not particularly enjoy, choose differently the next time similar circumstances arise. The trick is that you need to be aware of your choices and accept the results...however, it is extremely important to RATIONALLY evaluate the results before you decide if they were good / bad for you.

Through life lived like this, you will be able strengthen your emotional state and become confident that your emotions are a very real reflection of who you have chosen to be...you could label this "Self Awareness".

The part that makes it all so very difficult is that we, the human race, have learned how to "fake" our emotions to manipulate other people. It is a sad reality...

I was looking for techniques in books. I understand what you mean, though.

Where have you learned of that concept? I'm intrigued by it.

Kyle, I have read many helpful books - and many "not so helpful" books...I have given some of these books to friends and family who do not gain anything from them...I feel, when a person is reading, he/she will only be able to understand / digest what he/she is reading when they have reached a basic understanding of themselves...if one is searching for wisdom and meaning, it may be best to begin by listening to a "teacher".

Have you ever heard of Dr. Wayne Dyer? He has penned many books...some helpful - some not...but he also has a DVD that is very, very helpful. He explains concepts / thoughts in a method that helps even the newest minds begin to understand their individual realities...I have only watched his presentations on public television but the man delivers his insight in an amazing way...

There is also an author of a series of three books that are quite intriguing...the series is called "Conversations With God" by Neale Donald Walsch. I found the first of the three to be the most applicable read.

Then there is the "Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. That was another very interesting read...I have actually purchased about a dozen copies of that book as I keep gving my copy away...

I hope I spelled all the authors names correctly...hope this helps in your journey!

Kylie
My daughter when she was made a manager of 30 people before she was 30 asked me what books she should read. I told her the most critical skill for a manager was emotional intelligence but unfortunately while Goldman describes what EQ is and why it is important he did not describe how you can improve your EQ. I ended up writing a book for Louisa called The Humm Handbook-Lifting your Level of Emotional Intelligence. Contrary to what some of your readers have said many people have read this book and found it very helpful in lifting their EQ.
Cheers
