What is killer instinct?

There is a thing that many people killer instinct. What is killer instinct? Is killer instinct really the basic innate natural primal determination of every human being to be extremely competitive, extremely confident, extremely brave, and extremely ruthless in many confrontations and competitions such as sports competitions, fist fights, fights to the death, gun fights, military battles, business competitions, political competitions, etc.?

Is a cowardly meek sissy teenager finally getting the courage to be in a fist fight with his bully that is the same size as him an example of a coward finally awakening his inner killer instinct to physically fight the one who wrongs him?

Is killer instinct really present in all human beings waiting to be awakened and developed through gritty experience?

Is killer instinct really far more present in males than in females? Does it have a connection to testosterone? Is killer instinct really what turns males into the so called "tough macho alpha males"?

Moreover, is there really such a thing called killer instinct?

I look at instinct as being a biological feature, something that is hardwired from birth.

Predators are born designed to kill. A predatory animal, e.g. cats, wolves, sharks are born with a "killer instinct".

Most animals prefer to flee and will only fight if cornered or trying to defend their young. In my opinion that is not a killer instinct. That animals will fight for self preservation is not a killer instinct.

So what about humans? Well, in my opinion we are born as social creatures that do not need to kill in order to survive. While we certainly have become the "Apex predator" on the planet, this was not because of some biological, hardwired instinct. We are not instinctual killers.

But that is just my definition of the concept. You listed several ways to frame it and that really is what answers the question of "What is killer instinct?" It is whatever way you wish to define it. There is no single correct, objective definition.
