What is a decision?

Postby d21engel » Fri Apr 02, 2010 6:10 am

Have you ever stopped to think about WHAT is a decision?

I've found that simple words--which I assume I know what they mean--actually hold the key for understanding what's running my life.

I'd like to invite everyone to discuss WHAT is a decision.

Decisions are the arc of your life. Your direction is determined each day by the decisions you make. Depending on what those choices are weigh heavily on what kind of life you will have and where you will possibly end up.

Well, this may be a leap, but here goes...

There are two types of decisions we can make. I will define / differentiate them as Decisions and Choices...

Decisions are based upon previous experience. No personal growth comes from decisons. Decisions are a direct reflection of the tangible reality. Decisions can have good or bad judgments placed upon them based on the results decisions have on those affected. Decisions are based upon knowledge.

Choices are based upon desired experiences. Personal growth ONLY comes from choices since choices have no link to a materialistic reality. Choices can have NO judgements - only the results can be judged. Choices are based upon emotion and feelings.

A decision is a choice you make. You make your choices based on your emotions and perceptions. Your decisions shape your destiny. If you make a decision while you are angry you will get a result, usually a negative one. If you cool down , release your anger and think about it, you might find yourself taking a different decision. You will get then a different result.

For example, if you decide that you will not smoke anymore because your love one told you that if you don't quit he/she will leave you, then you are making a decision based on fear. You might quit for a while but at the end you will get into the habit again.

decision is defined as The act of reaching a conclusion or making up one's mind, The passing of judgment on an issue under consideration. but I assumed it isnot the meaning of the word you want but how we carry on our decisions which is complex. the validity of our decision depend on our reason the more reasonable we are the better decisions we make. But reason itself is a vague word. I prefer this definition the sum of the intellectual powers this exclude emotions or any instinctual centers in the brain. so the more our decision come from understanding learning reading the situation the more likely to be good decision.

Hi,

Decision is always complicated as it involves risk. Decision is nothing but having dare to go ahead in chosen direction, accepting the uncertainties.

A good read "Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk" by Peter L. Bernstein
