Looking for list of psychological "effects"/"

Postby rm3 » Sat Aug 14, 2004 7:32 pm

I'm looking for a list or glossary of psychological "effects" either online or in a book. What I mean by "effects", "theories", "phenomenon" etc are things like the Foot-in-the-Door Phenomenon, the Serial Position Effect, the Fundamental Attribution Error, the P.T. Barnum Effect, the Bystander Effect, the I-knew-it-all-along Phenomenon, the Just-World Phenomenon, the Mere Exposure Effect, the Scapegoat Theory, the Misinformation Effect, the Overjustification Effect, etc... and other things like that, like Premack's principle and such.

Every one of these seems to be very interesting to me and I'd really like to find all I can. If anyone can help me (adding to the list, pointing me to a book or website, etc) I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Mmmm! Sounds a bit like "Looking for a convenient label effect" rm3! I am not sure where you would go to find such a thing, nor am I sure that it is useful, although I would hesitate to say that, because I don't know what your purpose is in looking.

When you have this information (if it can be found_, how do you intend to use it?

I've found that psychology textbooks in general provide a number of pieces of information about the functioning of human cognition and behavior, but that the 'labeled' pieces of information seem to be very useful summations, or simply more useful pieces of information. IE, practical (useable) summations of psychological research, such as how to improve memory, to influence oneself and others, to analyze and understand situations, etc. They seem more useful than other information found in psych books - such as the functioning of perception, the building of language, or the function of voltage-regulated channels for sodium and potassium in generation and propogation of action potentials.
