Can you help?

Postby Roger Elliott » Mon Sep 15, 2003 7:19 am

Hi!

As you may have noticed, we are at the moment trying to 'get these forums going'. The aim is to build them into an active and lively community of people helping each other.

Although the member list is growing every day, we really, really need our members to be as active as possible, so if you can spare a few moments to reply to a post, or pop up a new question or observation, that would be most appreciated.

As with any community, you tend to get out what you put in, and it would be great if this was the first place you come when you visit the Internet!

Here's a few ideas:

1) Make the forums your homepage. To do this (in Internet Explorer), go to Tools>Internet Options and at the top type www.uncommonforums.com

2) Whenever you have one of those wondering moments during the day, make a mental note to post your question or idea here, so we can all have a look!

3) Tell your friends we're here.

I hope we can make this into a valuable resource for practitioners and public alike. The more active we are, the more people will want to join the party.

Thank you for any help you can give,

All the best

Roger

Didn't know of this forum till I casually found it by browsing the site.
What is PHP mentioned at the bottom on the Registration form regarding Date Format?
And what is BBCode?
How do I enable the HTML option when I want to post a reply such as this one?
Ciao

Hi grovelli and welcome to Uncommon Forum! ;)

Because People can log in from anywhere in the world (and we are all at different times) the forum itself is automatically to GMT or London England time. You can set your local time according to + or - GMT and the forum will automatically sync your local time to the browsing person's local time (whom ever that may be) rather the seeing posts your posts and everyone elses posts at a time that may appear later (or earlier) than it really is.

The box that appears (you are referring to) is there only to show how dates appear, and you only need to set your time zone.

]And what is BBCode?

BBCode is primarily the same (at least in functionality) as normal html code but instead of using < > to define bb elements like "bold", "italic" or "links" etc. it uses [ ] - the results pretty much remains the same.

How do I enable the HTML option when I want to post a reply such as this one?

In your profile setup you can turn html on and off. Default is set to off as people can mostly use bbcode for formating functions.

Hope to see you here for a long time coming! :)

Hi Giorgio

Glad to see you here, I know with your inquiring mind you will be an active member of the community :D

I'm glad fathom was on hand to answer the technical questions, does that clear things up for you?

Ciao Roger,
Absolutely, Fathom(I wonder what his/her name is)'s answer is very good.
I don't understand though why, in spite of my selecting "Always allow HTML" in my profile preferences, the Options section when I post a reply keeps on being set to "HTML is OFF ".
Plus, when I click on the "Post Reply" button, it seems to me that my message is just added to the thread; how can I reply to a specific message within the thread, say, e.g., your message? I also noted that, in spite of me selecting "Notify me when a reply is posted", I only received an e-mail notification for Fathom's message, not yours.
And I'll make a post to your "Emotions and decision making" thread starting with an e-mail reply you sent me about music=hypnosis.

HTML is off

Don't really know why, but it appears to work anyway :)

Post Reply

Whenever you add to a thread, your post is always added at the end, that way the thread follows the order in which posts were made.

Notify when reply is posted

Not sure about that either, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it as you get posting! :D

I look forward to your input

There should work now. It was disable at the administration level.

Many boards are webmaster discussions that need to look at the raw code to help in the learning discussion. With html enabled you never get to see the raw code as the html elements show as the visable properties (webpage look) using the code.

My real name is Rod Brown -- my handle "Fathom" I have used since joining submarines (Canadian Navy) in 1979, later retiring to persue an eMarketing career.

I have been active in forums/discussion boards well before the World Wide Web was a reality thus the username is quite fitting but "hard to fathom" ;) without the history.
