Nervousness

Postby sb09 » Tue Apr 19, 2016 6:41 am

I'm not able to participate in the class as I get too nervous when I want to ask/say something. I know nothing bad is gonna happen to me but I start shivering, and my voice also becomes shaky. I've had this issue for quite some time, but I got away with it, as I my participation was not required, but now I'm sick of this. I try to stay calm but I still start shivering and I'm not properly able to say what I want to, even if the sentence is well framed in my mind. What should I do?
(PS: I'm 19 years old)

Go up to the teacher after class and ask a question. Do this for a week. The next week, raise your hand in class. Ask your teacher a question in front of the other students.

The above is not an exact formula, but basically you need to take the initiative. Don't be on the defensive, waiting to be asked to participate. Instead, go on the offensive. Take small steps to participate without being asked.

Richard's advice is great. In addition, here's an important aspect: let go of framing in your mind exactly what you want to say.

Instead, have a general idea and allow yourself to choose the words as you speak.
