Anxiety from the course - EEK!

Postby Peanut » Wed Oct 22, 2003 2:12 am

I am so appreciative of finding your on-line course re: self-confidence. The problem is that I've just gone thru the 1st tutorial, and I am feeling very anxious now.

I'm hoping that this doesn't mean that I'm 'not ready', because I really do need to get 'on with things.'

I don't intend to quit, but I am so uncomfortable with the 'choking' sensation that I am feeling. I will try to use breathing techniques, etc.....

I guess I was wondering if this is a common reaction (in your practice) to starting the program. It's not a surprise I suppose, because I'm trying to venture outside of my 'comfort zone.' I guess what I'm really asking is if you think this is just going to be 'the new norm' for me, (post panic/agoraphobia).

Thank you again for your assistance. Sincerely, Peanut

Hi Peanut

We're not from the school of "if it isn't hurting, it isn't doing any goood", and anxiety is not a common complaint from people starting the self confidence course, but it may be helpful in helping highlight why you are getting anxious in the first place.

It certainly doesn't mean you are 'not ready' (it's not really something one has to be 'ready' for). It may be, as you say, due to venturing out of your 'comfort zone', but of course our aim has to be to get you comfortable to be outside your comfort zone!

Can you tell us exactly what it is that you are anxious about after doing the first tutorial please?

Best

Roger

Hi again Peanut

Just been thinking... you have mentioned in previous posts that you are getting great results from your exercise program, which is excellent news, and testament to how serious you are about beating this.

Another key skills in anxiety management is relaxation of course. You have mentioned using breathing techniques (the 7/11?). Can you tell me if you practise any regular focused relaxation such as self hypnosis or meditation?

Thanks

Roger

Hi Roger: Thank you so much for you time in replying to my post.

I'm not sure what it is that caused me to become anxious while doing the exercise in the first tutorial, but since I have not completed it yet, (3 more questions to answer - spent a lot of time on the first one), I am going to give it another try today sometime.

I do have a relaxation tape and a 'conquer anxiety' program, but I have not been diligent in working with it. I will begin working with the relaxation part of the program again in conjunction with your on-line program.

I'm afraid that I don't know what 7/11 is, (except a convenience store in the U.S. - lol) - is there an explanation of it on the website? OH, WAIT - I just found the information on your site about the 7/11 breathing, and yes, the diaphrametic (sp?) breathing techniques are what I've learned, although I do not practice them regularly. Again, I will start doing that daily, and I am also studying the info. you have on your site about self-hypnosis.

Thanks again for everything. Most sincerely, Peanut
