Binge eating disorder treatments

Postby krazykuvaas » Wed Mar 16, 2011 8:43 pm

So, I've struggled with my weight for a long time. Then, I saw symptoms of binge eating disorder, and I had almost all of them. I was thinking that treatment is probably the next best option.

I was wondering if anyone has been treated for this disorder before. What kind of therapy did you use? How did you curb your binge eating?

Thanks!

I believe the first thing you should do is to see you doctor and between the two of you decide weather you have an emotional or physical problem. After that, get the correct kind of help. Either way be carefull not to pre diagnose yourself. If you do enough research on any subject you will find you have things in common with all of them. Also you dont want to focus on one thing too much because even if you dont have a condition you may end up convincing yourself into it.

If you think you have a binge eating disorder, you most likely do. It's not very hard to diagnose. Basically, if you can't resist the urge to eat and then don't have a "switch" that tells you when to stop eating, you probably have BED. If you have a moment when you feel full and then continue eating, anyway, then it's probably more psychological in nature. But barring that, there are some real physiological causes for the disorder that definitely require professional help.

Many studies have proven that eating disorders can be traced back to trauma or genetic/congenital predispostion, or both. Often, addressing the trauma is a good place to start and will be a good guage for a psychiatrist to determine what kind of medical treatment to apply.

The first step you can take is to do a web search for eating disorder clinics in your area. Or you can call your doctor's office and ask them for information.
You could also do a search for a registered dietician. Any of these places could help you find your way through your eating issues. I haven't had good results at all, personally, addressing my own ED through my primary doctor. It's really an issue for a specialist.

SOrry I don't have any easy fixes to offer. Eating disorders are serious and deeply rooted and definitely require intensive professional care. Good luck! If you don't have insurance, don't be afraid to ask what financial alternatives there are for treatment. Some places have grants reserved to pay for low income persons.

Good luck!

So, I've written some articles about binge eating disorder. I'm providing a link to them, and I hope they're helpful.

Wow! Bravo! You've outdone yourself. :D

I'm relieved to see you mention history of sexual abuse as a possible root of the behavior. I do wish you would've expounded more on this as it's own paragraph. "The Courage to Heal" would be a great referrence source.

While I'm by no means an authority on the subject, one big factor I missed was physiological causes. For intance, improper thyroid function could be the culprit, throwing certain necessary hormones out of whack. Also, brain chemistry, how a person is "wired" due to genetics. Stage of life and metabolism changes. Even the presence of internal parasites. (yuck!) I imagine there's a gammot. In which case one could follow all the steps mentioned for those with psychological causes and feel frustrated when they don't work.

Delighted with what you've done to help inform others. That's awesome. :)

I always start binging a few days before an exam, because of stress. I esily eat about 4000 calories per day...and just can't stop stuffing myself.

I am also obese..I binge even when I have no real impending stress, though.

I have always been overweight but not this fat. It's like I keep growing 30 lbs at every 5 to 10 years. Right now I am 22 and weigh about 180 lbs. I am starting to feel really bad, physically..I tire easily, my ankles and kneees hurt after walking for more than 10 minutes!!
I badly need to lose weight. I have a history of varicose veins in my family, so I am afraid of going down that road. I already have hemorrhoids, which is annoying enough. I've had them for about 6 years, now, or more.

Do you think history of neglect/emotional abuse would be enough to explain binging?

That you've identified you binge in response to stress indicates the problem may be rooted in psychological (cognitive, addiction) issues. However, you could also be inherantly 'wired' to overeat.

Do you have a history of abuse?

Are others in your family obese?

Yes, both my parents were obese(still are). I have an older sister who is slim, but she is very disciplined with eating.

I guess I have a history of emotional abuse/neglect coming from my parents, and everybody else, growing up, because I was fat.
But a lot of it is just loving food, as well.

I did grow up with unhealthy eating habits, too. Both my parents cooked when I was growing up, so I was raised to eat for pleasure, not need.
I still do, obviously. I usually drink about 3 cups of caffe latte per day, 3 teaspoons of sugar each, plus a few glasses of cola, plus one or two cups of chocolate milk, again 3 sugar teaspoons each..I eat sugar every day..I'd say at least 10 teaspoons per day.
Today I had a ton of icecream, for instance..I usually eat lots of chocolate, or butter bread with jam.
All this aside from 3 full meals per day, I guess. For instance I had pork roast with rice today, plus potato soup for lunch.
Boiled eggs plus 2 sandwiches for breakfast..and just some salted crackers for dinner.
Truth be told I never felt I was eating too much..because, like I said, ever since I was a kid, I was used to eating a lot, so I have no real measure.

I just cannot give up the pleasure food gives me.
