Non-native speakers presenting in English

Postby aknel » Mon Feb 08, 2016 4:52 pm

Hi everyone,

Are there any non-native English speakers here?

I was wondering, what do you find is the biggest struggle people have when they have to present in a second language? Why is it so difficult? (As if public speaking itself wasn't...)

Do you have any tips on what to try? Any experience with something in particular (good or bad)? Do you know about any resources - books, courses etc.?

Thanks a lot!

My observation is that people who practice a great deal tend to appear more comfortable -- and get better results.

Yes, I am a non native speaker. But my biggest struggle speaking in front of a bunch of strangers was never to do with the fact I was not a native speaker of English.

Obviously you need to prepare and memorise what you will say, but remember that nonverbal communication conveys most of the message, they reckon 60-90% depending on the situation. So, you might want to pay more focus to your body language and tone of voice rather than the actual speech.

You might find public speaking difficult for various other reasons other than being a non native speaker, though that can slightly increase your level of self consciousness. It's normal to feel nervous speaking before a crowd of people, but things like having prepared and practiced your speech in advance will give you increased confidence. Once you know what you will say, or even get your speech proof read for any grammatical errors, that should take some edge off the whole experience.

I'm non native speaker. Probably the biggest challenge if it comes to this is that I might forget to mention about something, which would be quite important to the bigger picture. It doesn't usually happen anyway, but there is always a bit of a stress even if you are the best speaker and I'm probably not the best anyway, but I can manage nicely though :)
